First Of 64 Giant Offshore Wind Turbines Installed In The North Sea, Set To Power 1.1 Million Homes

A remarkable milestone in Europe’s renewable energy landscape was quietly achieved out in the North Sea this week, as the first of 64 colossal wind turbines at the He Dreiht offshore wind farm began generating power under its own momentum. 

This towering turbine, the first of many soon to follow, represents the initial 15 megawatts of what will ultimately amount to nearly 1,000 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity — enough to power a medium-sized city entirely through wind energy.

A Subsidy-Free Success for EnBW

The He Dreiht wind farm is a project spearheaded by EnBW, one of Germany’s largest energy companies and a leading force in the nation’s push toward cleaner power generation. Uniquely, this ambitious project is being financed entirely without government subsidies — a rare feat in the renewable energy sector, where large-scale projects often rely on public funding to get off the ground.

“It will play a key role in helping us to significantly grow our renewable energy output from 6.6 GW to over 10 GW by 2030,” said Michael Class, head of EnBW’s generation portfolio development. 

This statement underscores the company’s strategic commitment to expand its green energy capacity by nearly 60% over the next six years, with offshore wind playing a pivotal role in reaching that target.

Immense Power from Giant Machines

The He Dreiht wind farm — which aptly translates to “It Spins” — is expected to reach a peak generation capacity of 980 megawatts once all turbines are installed and operational. To put that in perspective, that’s enough electricity to meet the annual power needs of approximately 1.1 million homes.

These turbines aren’t ordinary, either. According to Michelle Lewis at Electrek, each of these enormous machines is so powerful that just one complete rotation of its blades could provide enough electricity to power a typical household for an entire day. This kind of capability not only makes offshore wind farms like He Dreiht environmentally essential but also economically significant as demand for large-scale clean energy continues to grow across Europe and beyond.

An Epic Construction Effort at Sea

Building a project of this size and scope, dozens of kilometers off the coast, is no simple feat. At peak activity, as many as 500 workers will be involved in the offshore construction effort, spread across a fleet of 60 vessels specially equipped for the task. Foundations for each turbine were prepared last year, with massive bases drilled into the seabed to ensure stability against powerful ocean currents and high winds.

The installation process involves the use of ship-mounted cranes capable of lifting and securing each towering turbine into place. Given the challenging marine conditions and sheer size of the equipment involved, the logistical coordination behind this effort is as impressive as the technology itself.

International Investment and Shared Ownership

While EnBW retains majority control of the He Dreiht project, it isn’t going it alone. A partner consortium comprising Allianz Capital Partners, AIP, and Norges Bank Investment Management holds a 49.9% stake in the wind farm. This diversified ownership structure not only distributes financial risk but also reflects growing investor confidence in the long-term viability and profitability of large-scale renewable energy ventures.

Charting a Path for Europe’s Energy Future

As more turbines are raised and brought online in the coming months, He Dreiht will become one of the most powerful offshore wind farms operating in European waters. Beyond its impressive output, the project represents a new chapter in how major renewable energy infrastructure can be developed without direct state subsidies, driven instead by market forces and private investment.
