A Surprising Growth in Global Tree Cover

Despite decades of alarming headlines about deforestation and ecosystem degradation, new research suggests there’s a twist in the narrative: the world’s tree cover has actually increased over the past 35 years. A study published in the prestigious science journal Nature reports that global tree cover expanded by 2.24 million square kilometers between 1982 and 2016. That’s an area roughly the combined size of Texas and Alaska.

This unexpected growth was discovered by a team of scientists at the University of Maryland. They used advanced satellite imaging and geographic information system (GIS) technology to track tree cover changes across the globe. The study accounted for various factors including forest loss due to logging or land-use changes, as well as gains driven by natural regrowth and human intervention. Their findings challenge a widespread perception that forest loss is universally outpacing forest recovery.

Where Trees Are Gaining Ground

The rise in global tree cover is largely attributed to three major trends. First, agricultural abandonment across parts of Europe, Asia, and North America has allowed former farmland to revert to forest. In these regions, as rural populations migrate to cities and agricultural practices consolidate, marginal lands are often left fallow and naturally reforest over time.

Second, climate change has played a surprising role. As global temperatures rise, some areas near the poles have become more hospitable to trees. This has led to forests creeping further north and south into previously treeless tundra zones.

Third, large-scale tree planting initiatives — most notably in China — have contributed significantly. Through its “Green Great Wall” program, China has planted billions of trees since the 1970s to combat desertification and soil erosion. These afforestation efforts have shown tangible results in increasing national and global tree cover.

A Cautionary Note on Biodiversity Loss

However, the study also highlights a sobering truth. While tree cover has increased overall, not all forests are created equal. Tropical rainforests — the Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystems — have suffered significant losses. These forests are home to countless plant and animal species found nowhere else, and their destruction represents not only a loss of green cover but also an irreplaceable loss of life and ecological complexity.

“Sixty percent of the changes in forest cover over the study period were directly linked to human activity,” the researchers stated. This includes deforestation for agriculture, mining, and infrastructure development. In particular, tropical regions such as the Amazon, Southeast Asia, and Central Africa have experienced extensive forest loss driven by commercial agriculture, logging, and land speculation.

The replacement of ancient, complex forests with monoculture plantations or cleared land weakens nature’s resilience and ability to sequester carbon, regulate rainfall, and support diverse lifeforms. As one researcher put it, “It’s important to recognize that a tree plantation is not a forest.”

The Role of Individuals in Protecting Forests

Despite these alarming trends, individuals still have power to make a difference. Experts recommend a simple mantra: reduce, reuse, and recycle — in that order. These actions help limit the demand for raw materials sourced from forests, including paper, packaging, and wood products.

Diet also plays a role. Reducing meat consumption, particularly beef, can lessen pressure on forested lands used for grazing or soy production, a major livestock feed ingredient. Finally, advocating for stronger environmental policies and holding governments accountable is essential. By demanding better protections for natural ecosystems, citizens can help shift the focus from short-term exploitation to long-term sustainability.

According to the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Russia holds the title for the world’s largest forest area. Its vast boreal forests cover about 815 million hectares, accounting for more than 20% of all forested land on the planet. Brazil, known for its Amazon rainforest, ranks second, followed by Canada and the United States.
