Founded at the MIT campus in Boston, CFS has quickly risen to prominence in the global race to harness fusion energy. With an impressive $2 billion in backing from 60 private investors—including tech giants like Google and energy moguls such as the Italian oil and gas titan Eni—the company is set to make history. “Dominion will provide us with development and technical expertise while we’ll provide them with knowledge about how to build and operate fusion power plants,” said CFS CEO Bob Mumgaard, acknowledging the unique partnership that will propel this groundbreaking project forward.

Governor Youngkin and his administration have already succeeded where others have failed, securing this high-stakes fusion venture in a highly competitive global landscape. Chesterfield County was selected over more than 100 other potential sites worldwide, underscoring the significance of this moment in both technological and economic history. The ARC fusion plant will not only power homes and industries but could also bring billions of dollars in economic development to the region, transforming Virginia into a new epicenter of innovation and sustainability.

This plant will be part of a pioneering effort to develop a fully functional commercial fusion reactor. The project’s initial phase, slated for completion in 2026, will introduce a state-of-the-art fusion complex. The groundbreaking ARC plant will use a tokamak—an advanced, doughnut-shaped chamber designed to house superconducting magnets. These magnets will superheat hydrogen isotopes to an astonishing 180 million degrees Fahrenheit, creating a plasma capable of fusing the hydrogen atoms together. The process generates massive amounts of energy without producing radioactive waste—a stark contrast to the highly dangerous and polluting methods of traditional nuclear power.
