Vildmarksvägen
For me, the Wilderness Road (Vildmarksvägen), along with the next road on the list, is among my personal favorite roads in Sweden. Although it’s very personal, I think there are few people who don’t enjoy the unique Wilderness Road. The road begins and ends in Strömsund in Jämtland and takes you over the high-altitude Stekenjokk to Swedish Lapland. And… I even live on the Wilderness Road, in the village of Dorotea. The Wilderness Road is 500 kilometers long and open each year in summer, between June 6th and October 15th.
Flatruet route
Flatruet is the highest road in Sweden, located at 947 meters above sea level. It connects the villages of Funäsdalen and Ljungdalen in the province of Jämtland. Much of the route is unpaved, but you can generally drive it without any problems with your campervan or car. I drove the Flatruet (“Flat road”) from the south and really enjoyed the empty but stunning landscape. At the summit, there’s a parking lot with many campervans, but I didn’t want the crowds and camped a few kilometers past the highest point, with just one other campervan in sight.
Ritsemvägen
The Ritsemvägen in Swedish Lapland is beautiful and truly one of the most beautiful routes in Sweden! I’ve driven it several times and am always amazed by the bizarre mountains that rise up from the valley. The first section of the route from the E45 is relatively flat, but after an hour or so, you can see the mountains of Sarek National Park and Stora Sjöfallet in the distance. These are some of Sweden’s most rugged national parks and only accessible on foot.
The paved road ends at Naturum Laponia, from where the road becomes worse and narrower. I eventually continued on to Vakkotavare, where the Kungsleden trail joins the road. From here, hikers take the bus and boat to Saltoluokta to continue their hike. At the end of the road, you’ll have beautiful views of Áhkka, the sacred Sami mountain. The road ends at the settlement of Ritsem.
The E14 to Norway
The E14 between Östersund and the Norwegian border is a well-maintained route with numerous scenic side roads. To your left are the mountains of the Vålådalen Nature Reserve, and to your right are those of the Åre ski resort, Sweden’s premier winter sports destination. Be sure to explore the side roads; the one to Storulvån on the Norwegian border is also highly recommended!
Magic Road, Idrefjäll / Nipfjället
One of the most beautiful roads in Sweden you can do in a short time is the one from the village of Idre to Nipfjället Nature Reserve. You drive all the way up to the treeline, arriving at the Magic Road. It feels like you’re driving uphill while you’re rolling downhill. You can also encounter reindeer on this route, which makes it extra special. At the end of the road, you’ll get to a large parking lot, and it’s only a short walk to Nipfjället, a mountain offering stunning views all the way to Norway.
Oresund Bridge
I always feel a little melancholic when I drive into Sweden via the Öresund Bridge, because it’s always so wonderful to simply drive into Sweden in your own car. The bridge is 16 kilometers long and connects Copenhagen with Malmö. Near Copenhagen, you initially drive underground for a while, but soon you emerge onto the fantastic bridge with stunning views over the water.
