A Winning Google Ads Formula for Salons—and Other Local Businesses

Maybe you received leads, but not enough paying customers. Or maybe you could never tell which leads came from Google—or whether the advertising actually made you money.

Here is what we learned: Google may be generating leads, but you haven’t told it which ones made you money.

The Problem: The Loop Is Broken

Imagine Google sends your salon 10 leads, but only two become paying customers. You know which two mattered. Google does not. As far as Google is concerned, all 10 leads were successful. So it continues looking for more people like all 10—including the eight who never purchased anything.

That is where most campaigns stop:

Google Ad → Lead → ?

The advertising generated a lead, but Google never learned what happened next. Share that information with Google, and you complete the loop:

Google Ad → Lead → Paying Customer → Sale Reported to Google → Better Leads

That last step changes everything.

We Tested the Formula With Marbella Salon

We first put this strategy into practice with Marbella Salon in Houston, Texas. The breakthrough was not a secret keyword or a clever new ad. It was giving Google better information. When a Google lead became a paying customer, we sent that information back to Google. When possible, we also reported how much the customer spent. Now Google could see the difference between someone who submitted a form and disappeared and someone who scheduled an appointment, showed up and paid for a service.

Google began learning which searches and customer signals were producing actual sales. It could then use that knowledge to find more people who were likely to become customers.

The result: Marbella Salon’s cost per conversion dropped from about $40 to closer to $10.

After seeing the strategy work for Marbella Salon, we successfully tested the same formula with other local businesses.

Why Completing the Loop Works

The machine-learning technology behind Google and Meta advertising has become incredibly powerful. These platforms are very good at spotting patterns—but only if you show them what success looks like.

If you tell Google that every lead is a success, it will look for more leads.

If you tell Google which leads became customers, it can look for more customers.

If you also tell Google how much each customer spent, it can focus on finding customers who are more likely to generate revenue.

That is a much better goal than simply producing the largest number of form submissions.

The Formula

The formula is straightforward:

  • Generate the lead.
  • Track whether the lead becomes a paying customer.
  • Report the sale and revenue back to Google.
  • Let Google use that information to improve the campaign.

For a salon, this usually means connecting the booking or point-of-sale system to Google Ads. For another service business, it may mean connecting its customer-management or sales system.

The technology may be different for every business, but the strategy remains the same: Complete the loop and give Google a clear picture of the customer you want.

This Works Beyond Salons

We developed this formula while working with a salon, but it can work for most local service businesses—from plumbers and roofers to dentists, auto repair shops and law firms.

One important note: Before launching a traditional Google Ads campaign, check whether Google Local Services Ads are available for your business category and location.

For eligible businesses—including hair and nail salons—Local Services Ads are often the smartest place to start. They appear prominently when local customers search for services and charge for leads rather than clicks. You should still track which of those leads become paying customers.

Of course, advertising cannot fix poor service or weak follow-up. You still need to answer the phone, make the sale and give customers an experience worth paying for. But if you run a good business and people want your services, completing the loop creates a rock-solid foundation for Google Ads.

Before deciding that Google Ads does not work for your business, ask one question:

Did you ever tell Google which leads became customers?

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
