Tariff Drama Fails to Lift Viewership for the Big 3 Networks

In relation to all the cable networks, CNN slid from fifth to sixth place in total viewers and dropped from No. 8 to No. 9 in the demo. During total day, it slipped from third to fourth place in total viewers and remained in sixth place in the demo. 

Looking at these networks’ performance alongside the same period a year ago (the week of April 8):

  • During primetime, Fox News increased +30% among both total viewers and the A25-54 demo. During total day, the network saw gains of +28% in total viewers and +27% in the demo.
  • MSNBC was up 4% in total viewers by +4%, but fell -2% in the demo. During total day, the network was down -16% in total viewers and -22% in the demo.
  •  In primetime, CNN saw losses of -8% in total viewers and -11% in the demo. During total day, it fell by -11% in total viewers and -17% in the demo.

PROGRAMMING:

Fox News held 13 out of the Top 15 spots for the most-watched cable news shows of the week in total viewers. The Five (4.074 million viewers at 5 p.m. ET) led the way and surpassed 4 million viewers for its 21st consecutive week. MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show (2.080 million viewers at 9 p.m. ET) cracked the Top 10 with a No. 8 finish.

The Five (278,000 viewers at 5 p.m. ET) also topped the Top 15 shows in the Adults 25-54 demo, with Fox News occupying 14 spots overall. The Rachel Maddow Show (164,000 at 9 p.m. ET) slipped in at No. 15.
