Why Buy Two OOH Sites Less Than 2km Apart?

Buying two outdoor advertising sites less than 2km apart on Orchard Road does not necessarily mean buying the same audience twice. Mandai Wildlife Reserve’s campaign at voco Orchard and The Heeren shows how nearby Out of Home media locations can perform different jobs: a solus static display at voco creates uninterrupted visual ownership, while digital at The Heeren allows Mandai to use multiple creatives to reveal different attractions and experiences.

The strategy is not simply about having more sites. It is about using location, audience context, frequency and format differently along the same valuable consumer journey.

Why Would a Brand Advertise Twice Along the Same Stretch of Orchard Road?

If a brand already has a prominent outdoor advertising site on Orchard Road, why buy another one less than 2km away?

Because proximity does not necessarily mean duplication.

Mandai Wildlife Reserve is currently advertising at both voco Orchard and The Heeren. TPM’s exclusive Orchard Road inventory positions the two sites differently: voco as a high-impact large-format static display at a hotel location, and The Heeren as an LED screen within a busy Orchard retail environment.

The two locations are also at different points along the Orchard journey. voco is at 581 Orchard Road, while The Heeren is at 260 Orchard Road at the Somerset Orchard domination junction.

They are close enough to build repetition, but different enough to create another audience moment.

For me, that is the more interesting media planning question.

Not:

Are the sites too close together?

But:

Are the sites doing the same job?

In Mandai’s case, they are not.

Same Orchard Road, Different Audience Moments

One mistake advertisers can make is treating Orchard Road as one single audience.

It is not.

voco Orchard sits closer to the Claymore, Ardmore, Cuscaden and Tanglin side of Orchard Road. As discussed in our earlier Mandai campaign, its surrounding catchment includes hotels, affluent residential enclaves, premium retail and families who may use this part of Orchard as part of their everyday neighbourhood.

Explore how Mandai Wildlife Reserve showcased its campaign at voco Orchard.

The Heeren sits further into the central Orchard shopping belt. Its official location is 260 Orchard Road, with access from Bideford and Cairnhill Roads and public transport connections around the Orchard and Somerset catchment.

A person who encounters Mandai at voco could therefore encounter the brand again later while moving further down Orchard Road for shopping, dining or entertainment.

That is not necessarily wasted exposure.

The location has changed, the audience moment has changed and, importantly, the creative has changed.

Static at voco Orchard: One Message With Complete Ownership

The Mandai execution at voco shows what static OOH can do particularly well.

The large-format backlit display is relatively solus, with very little competing advertising immediately around the media face.

Mandai owns that advertising surface continuously.

There is no rotation.

There is no need for the viewer to wait for the right frame.

The campaign has one strong destination idea:

Imagine Singapore but Wilder.

For this particular creative, that simplicity is part of its strength.

The landscape, wildlife and greenery have space to breathe. The backlit format gives the colours greater depth and strong visibility as daylight changes into evening.

More importantly, the lack of surrounding media clutter creates a focused eye viewing experience.

It does not feel like a “by the way” insertion appearing amongst multiple other advertisers.

Mandai is the message.

Static concentrates attention.

Digital at The Heeren: Why Multiple Creatives Make Sense

The Heeren campaign has a different communication job.

Mandai has not simply taken the voco artwork and made it move.

There are three different video executions in the campaign. The buy also ensured domination which ensured that more videos did not dilute the number of spots per video.

One introduces family-oriented experiences through ideas such as “Feel Wilder” at Singapore Zoo and “Play Wilder” at Curiosity Cove.

See the Mandai campaign at The Heeren in action.

Another is the master destination creative. It starts with Singapore and visually opens into the wider Mandai environment before landing on “Imagine Singapore but Wilder”.

A third takes a more adventurous route through Rainforest Wild Adventure and Night Safari, using messages such as “Venture Wilder” and “Immerse Wilder”.

This makes digital useful for a reason beyond movement.

There are genuinely multiple things worth saying.

Mandai’s current destination proposition now encompasses five wildlife parks, two nature-themed attractions, dining, play, immersive encounters and overnight stays. Its new Imagine Wilder campaign is specifically designed to encourage both local and international visitors to look beyond what they already know about Mandai.

One static image can establish that world.

Digital can start opening it up.

Static Gives Mandai One World to Own. Digital Opens That World Up

This is why I do not see static and digital OOH as a hierarchy.

Digital is not automatically better because it moves.

Static is not less effective because it does not.

They perform different communication jobs.

At voco, Mandai benefits from one strong hero visual, continuous presence and complete ownership of the advertising surface.

At The Heeren, Mandai can use several executions to show that “wilder” might mean something different to a family visiting Singapore Zoo, a child exploring Curiosity Cove, or someone looking for a more adventurous experience.

The digital screen allows Mandai to expand the conversation without forcing everything into one artwork.

Static concentrates attention. Digital expands the conversation.

The strength comes from choosing the format because it suits the creative, not choosing the technology first and finding a reason for it later.

Why Repetition Across Orchard Road Is Not Necessarily Wasted Exposure

Advertisers sometimes worry that putting two sites close together means paying twice to reach the same person.

But frequency is accepted almost everywhere else in advertising.

Brands retarget online.

Television campaigns repeat.

Social media campaigns serve different pieces of content to the same consumer.

Brand building rarely assumes that one exposure is sufficient.

Why should OOH be completely different?

If someone sees Mandai at voco and then sees Mandai again at The Heeren, the second encounter can reinforce recognition while adding something new.

The first exposure says:

Imagine Singapore but Wilder.

The next can start answering:

What could I actually do there?

That changes repetition into progression.

The objective is not to show exactly the same advertisement twice.

It is to make each exposure earn its place in the journey.

Why Two Sites 2km Apart Can Be Better Than Two Sites 10km Apart

OOH planning should not become a geography contest.

A media plan does not automatically become better because every billboard is further away from the last one.

Sometimes the more commercially valuable strategy is to identify one important audience corridor and build stronger presence within it.

A visitor might leave a hotel, have lunch, shop further down Orchard Road, meet friends and return later in the evening.

A local family may move between home, enrichment, retail, dining and leisure within the same wider district.

Those journeys can happen within a surprisingly small geography.

So two sites less than 2km apart may be more useful than two sites 10km apart if that 2km is where your customer is actually spending the afternoon.

The real value is not the distance between the dots on a media map.

It is what happens between them.

When Does Buying Both Static and Digital OOH Make Sense?

The combination becomes particularly useful when an advertiser has both a strong master proposition and several additional messages worth communicating.

A luxury automotive brand might use a large-format static display for one hero vehicle, then digital for several models or product features. A bank might use static for a major brand message, while digital introduces credit cards, travel benefits, investments or wealth products. A tourism destination can create desire through one strong destination image, then use digital to reveal the different things visitors can actually do there.

The same logic can apply to luxury automotive, airlines and resorts, banks and credit cards, insurance, investment platforms, wealth management, property, premium home appliances, private healthcare, beauty, entertainment and premium lifestyle services.

But buying two sites simply because both are available is not a strategy.

Each location should have a reason to exist.

What Mandai’s Orchard Road Campaign Gets Right

What interests me most about this campaign is not that Mandai uses both static and digital.

It is that the creative respects what each format does well.

The voco execution does not need movement.

Its strength is its scale, colour, backlit presentation, solus nature and uninterrupted ownership.

The Heeren executions do not simply recreate a static poster on an LED screen.

They use the ability to change creative to introduce different parts of the Mandai destination.

That sounds obvious, but it is an important distinction.

Do not buy digital just because the media can move.

Do not dismiss static because it cannot.

Start with four questions:

Who is seeing the site? What are they doing there? What does the brand need to say? Which format communicates that message best?

That usually leads to a better media decision than beginning with static versus digital.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orchard Road Outdoor Advertising

Why buy two outdoor advertising sites close together on Orchard Road?

Nearby sites can serve different audience moments and different communication roles. If each exposure reinforces or develops the campaign rather than simply repeating it, proximity can create useful frequency instead of unnecessary duplication.

Is digital OOH better than static OOH?

No. Static OOH offers continuous presence, visual ownership, repetition and focused viewing. Digital OOH offers creative flexibility and the ability to show multiple messages. The right format depends on the campaign objective.

Why does digital work for Mandai at The Heeren?

Mandai has multiple attractions and experiences to communicate. Digital allows the brand to move between different creative stories while maintaining the same overall Imagine Wilder campaign platform.

Why does static work for Mandai at voco Orchard?

The voco site provides a large-format, backlit and relatively solus advertising environment. That allows one strong destination image to remain continuously visible without competing creative rotations.

Can a brand use static and digital OOH within the same Orchard Road campaign?

Yes. The formats can complement each other when they have different roles. Static can establish a powerful hero message while digital introduces different products, experiences or campaign propositions.

Advertise Across Orchard Road With TPM

Mandai’s campaign is a good reminder that OOH planning should go beyond counting sites or measuring how far apart they are.

Look at who sees each site, why they are there, how they move through the area, what the creative needs to communicate and what each format adds to the campaign.

At voco Orchard, static gives Mandai focused and uninterrupted visual ownership.

At The Heeren, digital gives Mandai the opportunity to reveal more of the destination.

Together, they build familiarity along the same commercially valuable Orchard Road journey without asking both sites to perform the same job.

A good location gets the brand seen. A network builds familiarity. The right format gives every exposure a reason to exist.
