An Indian electric vehicle takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft developer has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) reportedly worth $1 billion to provide 788 air ambulances.
On February 17, 2025, The ePlane Company said the agreement with International Critical Care Air Transfer Team (ICATT) was the “largest initial agreement in the eVTOL industry”.
ICATT, a specialized air ambulance service, provides 24/7 medical transfers of critically ill patients by air already operates a fleet of helicopters and planes but believes ePlane’s eVTOL aircraft could enable paramedics to access patients more easily in India’s congested cities and towns.
ePlane says that at its “core is the e200x eVTOL, with rooftop takeoff capability and the power to transport patients 7x faster than road vehicles”.
According to ePlane, is the first private Indian company to receive Design Organization Approval (DoA) from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for an electric aircraft.
It has been previously reported that the developer hopes to manufacture a certifiable aircraft by March 2025 and begin commercial operations in 2026.
In a LinkedIn post the Founder of The ePlane Company, Satya Chakravarthy, said: “This collaboration is a monumental step in expanding aerial medical services. Faster airlifts will bridge the gap between accident sites and medical facilities—reducing fatalities and improving accessibility.”
It is understood that the MOU was signed at Aero India 2025, which was held in Bengaluru from February 10 to 14, 2025.
Also commenting on LinkedIn, the Founder of ICATT, Shalini Nalwad, said: “This is going to be a very good solution in terms of organ air-lifts. 95% of the registered patient recipients die before they get an organ. This is purely because of the lack of logistics, not due to lack of donors. This collaboration is going to solve this problem and redefine access to healthcare in India.”
The e200x air taxi is being designed to travel up to 68 miles with two passengers onboard at up to 124 mph.
