Book Review: Eric Sloane’s An Age of Barns

My Favorite Barn Book

by Lynn R. Miller of Singing Horse Ranch

When I was a young dreamer of farms I had an unquenchable hunger for books on the subject, especially those which fed my poetic notions of the vocation. And amongst the books which started me off, I loved the picture books of the late Eric Sloane best. And from those I prized at the top my copy of his barn book.

Sloane was a lover of history and tools and architecture and the handmade. He was a consumate artist and filled his historical drawings with an almost tender accuracy which always rewards the tinker in each of us.

The folks at Voyageur Press [seems to be out of business – 2025] have done us all a favor by bringing back into print this magical treatise on barns and sheds. Sloane’s precise and lovely ink renderings still transport me back to those early musings. An Age of Barns belongs in your library if your interest includes the marriage of the practical and the beautiful in reverent attendance with history.
