I often get useful design ideas from group challenges.
Recently I participated in a weekly challenge over at Pattern Camp, which was to make a pattern using acorns! Autumn is such a beautiful time of the year with leaves changing colors and fall acorns crunching underfoot. It is during this time that I begin collecting leaves and tree nuts – just like I did when I was a kid. Sometimes the wonderment never leaves!
Our neighbor has an old oak tree, so access to fall acorns is nearby. I love their squat shape and the little ‘caps’ that sit upon the nut. Hard to get much cuter.
I took the six different drawings I had created – 4 acorns and 2 leaves – and began to move them around on a square tile to create a pattern. I’ll often make a few versions before deciding upon one.
After completion I added them to different products: leggings, a printed top, tote bag, mug, and even a pillow!
