How to lessen the global amount of food wasted, estimated at about 1/3 of all food produced?

Well, a charity in Copenhagen Denmark, WeFood, with only two stores— offers a novel approach to this massive problem. It sells only expired foods at steep discounts of 30-50% off their normal price. According to their website, in the first 3 months alone, they have rescued 25 tons of food from being thrown out. The profits from their operations go toward helping the poor in developing countries.

The suppliers come from a variety of sources (retail grocery chains, butcher shops, importers and others) and are donated to the stores. Not only that, there are volunteers who help with picking up and dropping off the food, stocking shelves and helping man the grocery stores.

The primary goals are to reduce food waste and use the proceeds to feed the world’s poorest people. Pretty cool!
