Reader Comment: Hilton Standard Room Rewards Becoming Practically Unavailable Worldwide?

A LoyaltyLobby reader sent us a case about Hilton hotels that NEVER have standard rooms available, making only Premium Rooms available and rendering free night awards earned from cobranded Amex cards worthless.

I am a Hilton Honors Diamond Reserve member and have become increasingly concerned about the practical availability of Standard Room Rewards at certain Hilton properties.

What initially appeared to me to be an issue with individual resort hotels in Türkiye now seems potentially broader.

The most striking example is Hilton Dalaman Sarigerme Resort & Golf, a property I have visited annually for approximately ten years. Standard Room Rewards have now effectively disappeared across almost the entire booking calendar, despite Garden View and River View rooms continuing to be sold through the hotel’s own reservation channels, tour operators and travel agencies.

According to the hotel’s own room inventory information, there are 118 Garden View and 32 River View Guest Rooms – 150 rooms in these two categories alone – which have traditionally been available as Standard Room Rewards.

Yet Hilton.com now predominantly offers Premium Room Rewards at substantially higher prices.

I have found similar concerns at DoubleTree by Hilton Antalya-Kemer All-Inclusive Resort, where despite repeatedly searching up to a year in advance, I have personally never seen points availability.

I also checked Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi. For one example period, Hilton was offering a Premium Room Reward at an extraordinary 1,252,000 points per night, while I could not find a Standard Room Reward.

This raises an important question for Hilton Honors members: if Standard Room Reward inventory is effectively unavailable at certain properties for months or even an entire booking calendar, what does Hilton’s “No Blackout Dates On Reward Stays” benefit mean in practice?

There is another important consequence for U.S. Hilton credit card holders. I receive Free Night Rewards through two Hilton American Express credit cards. If Standard Room Reward availability disappears, the practical ability to use these certificates at such properties disappears with it.

I have now submitted a detailed formal complaint to Hilton Honors asking them to investigate these practices and, among other things, to identify at least one actual date on which a Standard Room Reward can be booked at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi if such a standard room category exists.

The reader sent us screenshots and the complaint they sent to the Hilton Reserve customer service, which is likely the former Diamond service, now farmed out to India (with sometimes incoherent replies).

I checked the availability for Hilton Dalaman Sarigerme Resort & Golf between now and the end of the schedule for stays of 1 to 5 nights, and there was not a single combination that would have yielded a standard award night for this property that should have plenty of standard rooms, as they have 550 or so keys overall.

Hotels may sometimes have a minimum stay requirement, but that is not the case here.

What they seem to have done, however, is to remove the following room types from the Hilton sales channels altogether, as they are not bookable for ANY date:

The following room types are available through Hilton:

Why would the hotel remove inventory from Hilton?

Hilton’s award reimbursement rate is perhaps $20 per night for this hotel, regardless of the number of points that their standard room requires. The reimbursement rate is significantly higher during high-occupancy periods and for premium rooms, however.

The Premium Awards are entirely dynamic and value each Hilton Honors point at 0.2 US cents or less.

The property doesn’t want to accommodate guests with standard points bookings due to a low reimbursement rate.

What surprises me, however, is that Hilton’s loyalty team is sleeping at the wheel and doesn’t have tools in place to trigger an internal alert and compliance check/audit when the property doesn’t have standard rooms available for any date. Something like this shouldn’t be that difficult to “build” in 2026 if only they cared.

The hotel was most recently refurbished in 2024, so these rooms cannot be out for “maintenance” either.

The reader also mentions the Waldorf Astoria Maldives, where yours truly has stayed, albeit I cut my 10-night award stay to just 3, as it was not ready for business right after opening, and moved to W instead, which was fantastic (I had stayed there previously).

I believe that the “standard” rooms at this hotel are truly sold out, as it is a very sought-after property, albeit not my favorite.

Conclusion

It is unfortunate when hotels play games and people at the corporate level who should ensure compliance are hibernating.

But I do partially understand this from the hotel’s perspective.

Would you sell rooms for Hilton Honors if you only get $20 when your “retail” rate is 15 to 20 times that?

Have you come across other Honors “participating” properties that never have any standard room availability? Please drop me an email or leave a comment below.
