Rémy Cointreau Sales Rise In Q1 On “Solid Growth” In The U.S.
Rémy Cointreau posted sales up 1.3% organically to €223 million ($254m) for its fiscal first quarter ended in June, boosted by improvement in its core Cognac division and solid performance in the U.S. market. The company added that moving forward it expects “a return to sustainable organic sales growth, with momentum expected to strengthen progressively over the year.”
Rémy’s core Cognac business, led by Rémy Martin, grew 7.7% to €142 million ($162m) in the first quarter, boosted by Asia but also the U.S., where shipments “remained resilient, with solid sales growth supported by a further sequential improvement in depletions,” according to the company. According to Impact Databank, Rémy Martin had global retail value of $975 million last year on volume of 1.4 million 9-liter cases.
In Rémy’s Liqueurs & Spirits division, sales fell 6.6% to €80 million ($91m) on lower shipments, particularly in the U.S., following a strong rebound in shipments the previous quarter. Still, Rémy added that underlying trends remained solid for key brands like Cointreau, The Botanist, Bruichladdich, and Mount Gay, showing positive depletion growth for the quarter.
Among Rémy’s leading labels in the U.S., Rémy Martin continued to see volume slip in control states through the first five months of this year, but Cointreau liqueur, The Botanist Gin, and Bruichladdich single malt Scotch all showed solid gains. In May, the company released its Cointreau Citrus Spritz ($20 a 750-ml.) nationally, boosting the brand’s presence in the growing spirits-based ready-to-serve category. —Daniel Marsteller
