Why Do You Want To Mold A Big Frozen Ice Ball For Your Cocktail?
Because its cool !!!
Well, cold actually, but cool because your drink doesn’t get as watered down and its visually stunning as you can see in the glass above. No longer on the rocks, its just one massive stone cold boulder of frozen H2O.
How To Freeze Your Ice Balls Off

These jumbo two inch diameter ice balls put the big chill on your cocktail without diluting the drink with water as fast as other shapes and sizes. The key is having the minimum surface area for the maximum volume of ice which the round sphere or ball shape does. We won’t bore you death with the science behind all of this, but if you split this same amount of ice into smaller cubes or chips, the broken up frozen pieces will have a lot more surfaces or outside area exposed to the warmer liquid in your drink and they will melt a lot faster.
A Chip Off The Cold Ice Block Doesn’t Cool Your Drink As Well
Another way to accomplish similar chilling results is to use huge square frozen blocks of water instead of large round spherical balls with these king cube ice trays. Not shaped quite mathematically perfect but much better than a bunch of separate smaller cubes as far as minimizing dilution is concerned. These giant chunks take up less space in the freezer too, if that’s a problem, since their flat sides allow butting up next to each other for a more compact tray.
