The Dalmore has collaborated with esteemed cask partner, Blandy’s Madeira for the fourth and final release in the Cask Curation Series: The Madeira Cask Edition.
Highland Single Malt Whisky, The Dalmore has revealed the much anticipated fourth edition of their Cask Curation Series: The Madeira Cask Edition.
First launched in 2023, the Cask Curation Series showcases The Dalmore’s heritage and artistry with multi-cask maturation, enabled by their treasured, exclusive relationships with their cask partners, each a producer of some of the world’s finest wines. The Series also honours and evokes the spirit of travel, a passion point for The Dalmore consumer, highlighting the journey of the casks from their wineries and bodegas around the globe, to The Dalmore distillery in the Scottish Highlands.
This final edition in the Cask Curation Series spotlights Madeira, a fortified wine produced on the Portuguese island of the same name. The Madeira Cask Edition sees The Dalmore partner with Blandy’s Madeira, who have been creating award-winning wines on the island for two centuries, across seven generations of the same family. Renowned for their uncompromising dedication to traditional production, including the Canteiro ageing process, Blandy’s Madeira is defined by its remarkable longevity and depth of flavour.
This edition explores The Dalmore’s character through the lens of three distinctly different styles of Madeira, resulting in a trio of exquisite Single Malt Whiskies, of which just 150 sets will ever be created.
Following revered prior editions which celebrated the flavours and long-standing partnerships across Sherry (González Byass), Port (Graham’s) and French Red Wine (Château Mont-Redon), The Dalmore set out to round off their prestigious Series with Madeira, reflecting The Dalmore whisky makers’ continued pursuit to source exceptional casks, to create exceptional whiskies.
Working with Blandy’s Madeira, The Dalmore whisky makers selected three distinct styles of Madeira wine, each carrying its own history, depth and character, to demonstrate how these different styles, themselves shaped through decades of maturation, could complement and reveal new dimensions of The Dalmore.
Madeira wines are renowned for their rich, decadent sweetness, offering far more than a dessert wine. In bringing these two worlds together through precise cask curation, the intention was never to dominate the spirit, but to reveal and enrich what was already waiting within.
The three whiskies in the Cask Curation Series: The Madeira Cask Edition are each natural colour and non-chill filtered. Aged 30, 34 and 45 Years Old, each whisky has been finished in different, hand-selected Madeira Pipes, specifically chosen to accentuate different facets of The Dalmore’s spirit.
The Dalmore Cask Curation Series: The Madeira Cask Edition – Aged 30 Years (49.3% ABV) has been matured for 29 years in American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels, before an eight-month finishing period in a 2010 Terrantez Madeira Pipe. One of Madeira’s rarest traditional styles, Terrantez is elegant and semi-dry in character, and its citrus lift, aromatic spice, and refined structure complement the bright and expressive nature of the mature spirit.
Expect aromas of orange blossom and citrus zest, with hints of hazelnuts, and exotic spice. Stone fruits, caramelised orange peel, toasted walnuts, and a subtle minerality can be found on the palate, with dried apricots, caramel, sweet oak, and allspice to finish.
The Dalmore Cask Curation Series: The Madeira Cask Edition – Aged 34 Years (44.5% ABV) has enjoyed maturation for over 33 years in American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels, before an eight-month finish in a 2018 Bual Madeira Pipe. Bual is richer, and more rounded in style, bringing warmth, layered sweetness and depth, and the generous character complements the broader, more developed nature of this whisky.
Aromas of dried figs, with splashes of stone fruit, vanilla toffee, and hints of cardamom welcome, before tastes of Seville orange, peach, Manuka honey, and nutmeg. Dried fruits, toffee, sweet oak, and patisserie spices leave a lingering finish.
The Dalmore Cask Curation Series: The Madeira Cask Edition – Aged 45 Years (40.7% ABV) is the oldest expression in this trio, and the oldest bottling across the Cask Curation Series. Matured for 44 years in American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels, this whisky was enriched by a three-month finish in a 2012 Malvasia Madeira Pipe. The richest and most decadent traditional style of Madeira, Malvasia delivers dark fruit richness, luxurious texture and lingering spice. This profound richness complements the remarkable complexity and resonance of this exceptionally mature spirit.
Dates and stewed fruit, layered with toffee, and stemmed ginger welcome on the nose, followed by flavours of golden syrup, dried fruits, chocolate orange, and walnut, to be enjoyed on the palate. Spiced orange, toffee, sweet malt, and crystalised ginger linger to finish.
Consistent with the Series to date, just 150 sets have been created, meticulously curated to showcase a harmony of heritage and uncompromising luxury, which carries through beyond the whisky. The long voyages of the casks, from Madeira to Scotland, serve as inspiration for the packaging which evokes the spirit of travel with a presentation box which doubles as both a carry and display case. Handcrafted in Florence by Italian luggage makers AB Florence, the Saffiano leather for this edition features a warm ochre tone, carefully chosen to pay homage to the golden hues of Madeira’s sunlit landscapes and the rich amber of the celebrated wines, created by Blandy’s Madeira.
This trio of ultra-limited whisky is ideal for those who accept nothing less than the extraordinary.
