The Godfather is an official International Bartender’s Association cocktail. Its a simple two part drink composed of scotch whisky and almond flavored liqueur that the IBA lists in the sweet after-dinner category along with the Brandy Alexander, the Golden Cadillac and the Porto Flip among others.

Cocktail’s History Connected To Ties With The Mob?

Some sources credit Donato ‘Duke’ Antone with creating the Godfather cocktail along with a host of other of drinks.* While the origin of the cocktail’s name (and other details) are unclear, Disaronno’s website claims the drink was “created during the 1970s in the USA and the Godfather was the favored cocktail of Marlon Brando,” who starred as Don Corleone in the film’s title role.

You take Scotland’s whisky combined with Italy’s national liqueur and maybe end up with an Italian gangster on your father’s side with ties to Mario Puzo’s Godfather novel (1969) and the first movie in the trilogy (1972) all directed by Francis Ford Coppola. By the way, the French Connection is a book (1969), a movie (1971) and a drink mixed with Amaretto and France’s cognac. You make the connection [sic].

Behind Your Bar – How To Make The Godfather Cocktail At Home

The Godfather Drink Recipe:

  • 1 ½ oz Scotch whisky
  • ¾ oz Amaretto almond liqueur

Combine on the rocks in an old fashioned glass. Or, just use one large round ice ball as shown above to minimize diluting the drink from melting water.
