AZALEH – SOUND JOURNAL I, II, III, IV

Sound Journal IV is the latest edition in the series of soundscapes created by German electronic music producer Azaleh (Leonard Koerner). All four parts are released as separate albums, but I list them all because I think that the set of long-form soundscapes fits very well together.

‘Drone’ is not exactly a correct description for these compositions, because there’s a lot happening here. Azaleh creates slow, spacious and immersive soundscapes that subtly change in atmosphere, from dark to light, between melancholy and hopefullness. Music with a ‘storytelling’ quality.

Azaleh started making music in 2014 after experimenting with Ableton. His output is not strictly ‘ambient’: you’ll also find related genres like downtempo, drum & bass, garage, chillstep in his extensive back catalogue.

The four Sound Journals were my first introduction to the music of Azaleh. Somewhat to my own surprise, I had no problem listening to all of the 200 minutes in one continuous session. Which is something I rarely have the patience for!
