Simon Goff – Dream Sequence I

Simon Goff is a British violinist, multi-instrumentalist and composer whom I’ve followed for more than a few years now, mostly via his appearances and collaborations via Gizeh and 7K! imprints, and now releasing on the esteemed Sonic Pieces label, which is getting a very special treatment this month via Monique Recknagel‘s residency over at Headphone Community. In fact, today’s track premiere is part of this beloved label’s feature, as I slowly begin to pivot my time and energy toward focused deep dives rather than quick one-offs in the constant chase for new sounds. As this reality of ours evolves, speeds up, and swirls out of control, the only thing I can do is stand back, watch, listen, and share all its infolding with these honest words on honest music. It’s with these thoughts that I would like to premiere a track from Goff’s upcoming album, reflecting on an idea from Theatrum Mundi’s book, Interior Realms, which “challenges us to think not only about music as space, but also about how architecture can shape our ideas of composition,” and how “space can make us experience music internally differently.” The collection of essays unpacks ideas in which not only does space impact sound and music, but, in reverse, music also shapes and alters space. And in my mind, if space and time are a single continuum, then the displacement of space through alternating pressure levels to generate what we call “sound” in fact displaces time itself. And through this time we travel with this music. Let’s listen.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
