Have a great paper idea but need to connect with others to form a full session? You’re not alone! The OAH Panel Building Tool is here to help. Think of it as a scholarly dance floor—a welcoming space to meet fellow historians, share your ideas, and form panels for the 2027 Conference on American History.
You can submit your single paper, or volunteer to serve as a chair or commentator, and then explore a roster of others doing the same. Together, you’ll be able to build one of three session types:
- Traditional Paper Panel: three thematically related papers with a chair and a commentator (the latter may be the same person)
- Lightning Round: at least six related papers; each presenter gives a brief elevator pitch, followed by dialogue with 1–2 commentators and the audience
- Works-in-Progress (new!): two thematically related drafts (≤20 pages each) with two commentators; papers are pre-circulated on the OAH portal before the conference—perfect for workshopping. If you’re volunteering to comment, please indicate your interest in Works-in-Progress sessions.
Wondering how it works?
- Submit your single paper or your intent to chair/comment by February 1.
- After February 1, browse other submissions and available chairs/commentators.
- Invite collaborators or request to join a session in progress.
- Once everyone accepts, review your session, make any final edits, and submit it for consideration.
Some things to keep in mind:
- All proposed sessions must be formed and submitted by April 27.
- Dual and repeat participation policies still apply.
- Single papers will no longer be accepted directly through the regular Call for Proposals.
The standard Call for Proposals will be open December 1–April 27.
