Google launched its impressive video generation model in December 2024 for select countries, and it truly made waves. The video quality and user-friendly platform set it apart from RunwayML and OpenAI Sora. Now, Google has taken it a step further by integrating Veo 2 into the Dream Screen feature on YouTube Shorts. This allows creators to generate high-quality, AI-powered video clips and backgrounds directly within the YouTube app. Let’s dive in and learn more!
What is Veo 2?
Veo 2 is an advanced video generation model developed by Google DeepMind. It is designed to create highly realistic and detailed video content based on text descriptions. The model can generate video clips with accurate depictions of physics and human movement, making it ideal for applications such as YouTube’s Dream Screen feature.

Enhanced Capabilities with Dream Screen
Previously, Dream Screen allowed creators to generate AI-powered backgrounds for their Shorts using text prompts. With the integration of Veo 2, this feature now supports the creation of standalone video clips, offering greater flexibility and creativity.
How to Use the New Features?
- Generating Video Backgrounds:
- Open the Shorts camera within the YouTube app.
- Select the Green Screen option, then choose Dream Screen.
- Enter a text prompt describing the desired background.
- Choose from the AI-generated images or videos to set as your background.
- Creating Standalone Video Clips:
- Open the Shorts camera and tap the media picker.
- Tap “Create” at the top.
- Enter a text prompt for the content you wish to generate.
- Select the generated image or video.
- Tap “Create video” and choose the desired length.
These features are currently available in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans for broader expansion in the future. To maintain transparency, all AI-generated content will include SynthID watermarks and clear labels indicating its AI origin. This ensures viewers are aware of the content’s creation method.
Hands-on of Veo 2 on YouTube App
Veo 2 brings AI-powered video creation directly to the YouTube app. Here’s how to use it:
To use Veo 2 on the YouTube app, open the app and tap the Create button (plus icon), then select Create a new video. Enter a text prompt, like “helicopter flying over the city,” and choose a filter to define the video’s style, such as cartoonish or realistic. Veo 2 will generate images based on your prompt, and you can select one to transform into a video. The process takes 15 to 60 seconds. If the result isn’t perfect, tap Try Again to adjust motion or effects. For more complex videos, combine multiple AI-generated clips or mix them with real footage. Once satisfied, tap Done. The video will be tagged as AI-generated with SynthID watermarks before you publish it to YouTube Shorts or your feed.
Conclusion
What are your thoughts on Veo 2’s integration into the YouTube app? I think it’s a helpful tool for creators, allowing them to grow their channels while giving newcomers AI support to get started. It’s a bit disappointing that the feature isn’t available in all countries yet, but I’m looking forward to trying it out when it launches in India. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
