Kangala Wildlife Rescue has safely rescued Valerie, a dog who survived alone on Kangaroo Island in Australia for 529 days.
The miniature dachshund went missing in November 2023 during a family camping trip on the island. She escaped from her enclosure at Stokes Bay and vanished into the bush. Despite a week-long search with the assistance of locals, she was not found.
About a month ago, volunteers surprisingly spotted her, giving new energy to the search. After careful planning and patient efforts, they finally captured her safely.
Rescuing such a small dog on a big island was not easy. The team faced many difficult moments, but their hard work and support of the local community made the rescue a success.
“This rescue was a true testament to the dedication and perseverance of our team, the unwavering support of the community, and the power of collaboration,” Kangala Wildlife Rescue said in a Facebook post.
“The search for Valerie involved over 1000 volunteer hours and more than 5000 km traveled by volunteers in their private vehicles, the deployment and monitoring of numerous cameras and traps and the use of various forms of technology to successfully secure Valerie while ensuring her physical and psychological welfare,” the rescue organization added.
Valerie is healthy and ready to return to her loving family. Kangala Wildlife Rescue said they are taking a short break after the emotional rescue but will soon share more updates, including photos and videos of Valerie’s incredible story.
“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply relieved that Valerie is finally safe and able to begin her transition back to her loving parents, Josh and Georgia,” Kangala said.
