“太陽が沈んだら” by 府本モフ

Still writing the thesis, almost done. Then it’s… I was about to say, hunting for a brand new job; but there’s NaNoWriMo in between. Gotta get that taken care of first. It’s all planned out, just waiting on the starting gun to get going.

Short review this time as, to be honest, there isn’t much to say about this one. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing: what we have is a short, 28 pages B&W manga that falls well into the yuri fold. Seems to be a pretty popular genre in the dōjin  world, as it has always been actually. Anyway, 太陽が沈んだら (“When the sun sets”) is a charming, bittersweet short story about a love triangle marred by tragedy: how will university friends Nozomi and Tamae relationship change when the friend / rival / third vertex Kanae meets a sudden end? will the memory of their dear friend haunt their relationship, or will they find a way to move on?

府本モフ (Fumoto Mofu), author and part (sole member?) of the circle “Much Better Off” gives us the answer in a few essential, at times almost bare pages from 2019: dialogues are short, stripped bare and essential, mirroring a visual style a bit rougher than shojo but not quite josei. Charmingly amateurish, in a way, which I don’t mind – it gives street cred.

This is, apparently, the circle’s common fare, as their output seems equally subdivided between short, snappy youri outings, and… Uma Musume dōjinshi? Can’t say I’m a fan of the latter, but the covers still look very cool: it was mostly because of its front’s vivid colors that I bought 太陽が沈んだら.

So yeah, not much to add this time around. A cool little thing, should you enjoy indie yuri and manga that is rough around the edges in a charming kind of way.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
