Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 219 Manga Review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Erza squares off in her new outfit, based on her mom Irene Belserion’s outfit. Erza attacks the unimpressed Motherglare. In response, Motherglare kicks Erza in the chin. Erza plants her blade into the ground. The resulting power causes Motherglare to change her attitude.
Erza recalls sewing by hand her Irene outfit while they were on the road. Wendy wakes up and discovers what she’s doing. Erza explains to Wendy that by making her mom’s outfit, she hopes to acquire a new power from her mom. Unbeknownst to Erza, Irene’s spirit is within Wendy at that time. Thus Irene hears Erza’s wish.
In the present, Motherglare realizes Erza is taking the dragonized power out of the ground. Erza launches into an attack. In desperate response, Motherglare summons a lot of dragon eggs to use the hatchlings as shields. Motherglare gladly orders the dragons to shield her. Erza slaughters them all. Before Motherglare can react, Erza slices Motherglare through the gut.
With Motherglare’s defeat, all of her children collapse all over. Master Makarov senses Erza is behind it. Meanwhile, Erza reflects on how she wanted to call Irene “Mom”.
Thoughts/Review:
I guess even Mashima-sensei realized Erza’s arse pull of Irene’s outfit was a bridge too far. As such, he retcons in an explanation in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 219. I think we can fill in the blank so that the piece of Irene within Wendy enchanted the outfit Erza made so it would have Irene’s power. Of course Mashima-sensei doesn’t like to have these kinds of things hang around. As such, I wouldn’t expect Erza to every requip to the Irene outfit ever again. Well, at least until there’s a plot reason to bring it back.
Because this is a more tame shounen manga series, Motherglare doesn’t actually get cut in half. Erza’s cliched samurai attack should have sliced Motherglare into two piece. Instead, she’s just cut in the stomach and bleeding. I already know that once all of Motherglare’s gang are all defeated, we’ll see them all alive but defeated.
Is it kinda nice to see Erza thinking about her mom? Sure. Does it feel authentic? Not really. If we had more of Erza thinking about her mom all along, that would have helped. Heck, if we’d actually seen the retcon event of Erza hand sewing during lulls of previous travels, then it would have felt authentic. But as it is, Mashima-sensei realized he made a mistake, then inserted a retcon to explain things away. Well, I can’t get worked up over that.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 219 continues what feels to be the push to the end of the series. At the same time, Mashima-sensei gives us an Erza character episode, but sadly, it doesn’t feel authentic.
