During their New York Comic-Con panel, Bandai Namco Filmworks announced that Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom ZERO will be released in North American theatres in February 2027. The new film acts as a prequel to 2024’s Freedom and stars Shinn Asuka. Like the other entries in the SEED sub-series, the film was directed by Mitsuo Fukuda who co-wrote the script with his late wife, Chiaki Morosawa, alongside Shigeru Morita. The new movie will debut on January 15th in Japan.
After the collapse of the Destiny Plan proposed by Dullindal, which would have decided people’s fates based on genetics, Cagalli, the chief representative of the Orb United Emirates, has been working to bring about a peaceful new order by establishing a global peace monitoring agency called COMPS(Pronounced Compass).
C.E.74. The great war is over, but Shinn has yet to decide what course he should follow. Then a mobile suit which has survived many past battlefields is transferred from ZAFT to COMPS’s temporary base on Onogoro Island. That night, however, the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen by persons unknown.
To stop the situation from escalating, to recover the stolen machine, and for the sake of everything they must protect, Shinn and his comrades once again throw themselves into battle…
The panel featured guests Matthew Erickson, Matt Hill and Sam Vincent. The trio voiced Shinn Asuka, Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala in the original English-language dub of the show. Bandai Namco Filmworks confirmed they will be reprising those roles in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom ZERO. This will be the first time these actors have played the characters since 2011’s Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 video game.
The original dub of Gundam SEED and its follow-up, SEED Destiny, were recorded in Vancouver for Bandai Entertainment by Ocean Group. This version of the show is what YTV would air across Canada between 2004 and 2008. The duo had received several revisions after their initial Japanese broadcast, including altered television specials and compilation films. This culminated in 2011 with the launch of the HD Remaster that altered the original show’s 50 episode run into 48 episodes. A similar project for Destiny followed in 2013. In 2017, Bandai Namco Filmworks (then, Sunrise) announced these versions of the shows would receive an all-new English dub produced in the United States by NYAV Post with a completely separate cast. These would eventually be released on Blu-Ray in 2020, with Destiny in 2021. Most of the new cast would reprise those roles in the English dub of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. These are the dubs available for the SEED titles on Netflix.
As of this writing, it is not clear which studio is producing ZERO’s dub or if there will be additional reprisals.
To celebrate ZERO’s pending debut, the official Gundam YouTube channel is streaming the original English dub, with Destiny set to launch sometime soon. This is presented in the show’s 4:3 footage rather than any of the altered cuts.
After over a decade of Gundam productions recorded in the United States, Bandai Namco Filmworks has slowly begun acknowledging the Canadian casts. Mark Hildreth, Brad Swaile and Scott McNeil were guests at a Gundam Wing anniversary panel at San Diego Comi-Con in 2025. Ocean’s co-founder, Ken Morrison, provided a rare on-camera interview as part of the Endless Waltz theatrical release earlier this year. Swaile reprised his role as Setsuna in Gundam 00 for a trailer promoting the release of The Sorcery of Nymph Circe. (Notably, he did not voice Amuro in a similar promo tied to the original series.)
