mono – Episode 5 – Haruno’s Dry-Cured Ham Obsession and the Mysterious Ghost

Haruno finally finishes her first volume as she takes a break.

Haruno finally finished her first volume as she wanted to eat something special with the wine she just bought. However, when she gets to the refrigerator, she gets upset.

Haruno realizes her meat is gone.
Haruno gets upset at her grandmother using the meat she just bought.
Satsuki,An, and Shikishima becomes excited going on another trip.

Finally, after Haruno got her special dry-cured ham with her wine, sadly, her grandmother used it for a customer’s yakisoba noodle meal. Yep, Haruno was crying after her grandmother realized she messed up. Kako reminds Haruno of the place that makes that Yatsugatake ham, including the dry-cured one she bought. That is after she mentions that any grocery store chain sells the dry-cured ham Haruno bought. In short, Kako wants an excuse to go on a weekend trip.

Kako is obviously struggling in the heat.
The girls are like, the rest stop sells the meat, it’s time to go home.

On the highway, Kako indicated to Haruno that she was sweating. With that, they decided to stop at a rest area. Of course, the girls and Kako notice they are selling the dry-cured ham that Haruno cried about. They are like, they can just buy it and then head back home. Haruno insists on visiting that place that makes the ham.

All the ham that Haruno bought.
Shikishima sees the attraction spot she wanted to go.
Taishou of course traveled to this town.

When they arrived, Haruno bought a lot of ham at the shop. They went to Kiyosato, a district with many closed shops. It’s funny how the girls suddenly found Taishou wondering about it. Also, they witness other people trying to feed it and call it various nicknames. It’s weird how Kako mentions wanting to be a cat in her next life.

The girls take some 360 photos on the lift.
More of those photos the girls took.
Guess there is no coffee this time, the line is too long.
Obviously the girls are on a diet.

After all, he tried to get on the lift to an overlooked café, but the attendant stopped him before the girls said it was their cat. It’s too bad they couldn’t get a drink since the line is long. At least they took a lot of 360 photos. They also rode a Merry-go-round and had a meal. It’s funny how An, Satsuki, and Shikishima decide to get a half-size meal because they are trying to lose weight. After all, that contest has caused them to put on quite a bit of weight. Even after that, they are still hungry.

Haruno is buying a lot of ham.
Yes, she was heading to the ham section.
She bought quite a lot.

The funny thing is that while Haruno stopped by the shops, An, Satsuki, and Shikishima noticed that Haruno was buying a lot of ham. She purchases dry-cured ham from various shops. With that, they called Haruno “Hamu.” Haruno ignored the beer as she was tempted to buy more ham. In the end, she has 25000 yen worth of ham. I guess the trauma of her grandmother taking her ham led her to buy too much. Also, they left Taishou at the Overlook café, which is quite funny.

Haruno is lazy and she does quite a lot of sleeping.

In the second half, An and Satsuki are looking through timelapse 360 photos they took in front of their frequent shop. Ten days ago, Kako wanted to take a video of Haruno working. They used An’s camera, which looked beat up. When An and Satsuki reviewed the footage from the tablet, it’s funny how Haruno spends most of the time sleeping and getting drunk, with some part working on her manga. Seeing it is pretty amusing.

Funny how there is a stereotypical Japanese girl ghost in the corner nobody noticed.

Eventually, An and Satsuki notice a strange, long-haired girl wearing a red one-piece dress standing in a corner. When they came to check, it wasn’t there, meaning it was one of those ghosts. They can’t just throw salt in the corner, which can anger the ghost.

Kurokuma, a gothic lolita mangaka lady that is more successful than Haruno.
She even touches Haruno’s hair.
Yep, the ghost girl is on Haruno’s head.
Not exorcizing the ghost has negative impacts on Haruno.

Haruno called a more successful mangaka she knows, Torayo Kurokuma, who makes primarily horror manga involving a dog. She knows how to exorcise ghosts. As expected, she looks elegant and wears a gothic Lolita dress as her daily wear. She can see the ghost on Haruno and suggests cleaning the room and even putting the futon away.

At least Haruno manages to get rid of the ghost.

Eventually, Kurokuma thinks the ghost came from that tunnel, which they couldn’t drive through, but was haunted. Still, it’s funny to see Kurokuma go into the bathroom to throw up, but it wasn’t ghost-related, but what she ate. The ghost is harmless, but keeping it can ruin Haruno’s mangaka career through lower appetite and motivation.

With the ghost gone, it’s all good, right?
Riding the bus back brings back the ghost. Yep, Kurokuma ditches Haruno as she has to ride the bus and take the long way back home.

When Haruno and Kurokuma rode the bus through the tunnel, and Haruno said prayers while in the tunnel, it was good enough to get the ghost to leave. However, it came back when they went to the other side. Yep, the ghost has a liking for Haruno. The only way to get rid of it for good is to ride the bus again and take the train back to where she started. Sure, that is painful, but at least Haruno finally got rid of the ghost once and for all.
