Marvel Studios is getting ready to bring Vision back to the MCU with VisionQuest, a new Disney+ series centered on the White Vision and his search for answers about his identity.
The series arrives ahead of Avengers: Doctor Doom and continues a storyline that began with Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. Paul Bettany returns as Vision, taking on the character once again after the events of WandaVision.
Created by Terry Matalas, VisionQuest will feature eight episodes and is expected to explore a much more personal side of the character. James Spader is also returning as Ultron, while Diane Morgan and Emily Hampshire are among the confirmed cast members.
What Is VisionQuest About?
VisionQuest serves as a follow-up to WandaVision and takes place several years after the events of the earlier series.
At the end of WandaVision, White Vision recovered the original Vision’s memories before leaving. The new series will pick up from that point as he attempts to understand who he really is and what his existence means.
Rather than simply returning to superhero action, the story is expected to focus heavily on Vision’s internal struggle. He has the memories of the original Vision, but his experiences and physical identity are different, leaving him with questions about where he belongs.
His search for answers will also bring him into contact with advanced technology and the return of Ultron, creating a storyline that could connect Vision’s personal identity crisis with the MCU’s long-running exploration of artificial intelligence.
White Vision Faces an Identity Crisis
One of the main themes of the series will be Vision’s attempt to rebuild his sense of self.
The character has already experienced death, resurrection and a complete reconstruction of his body. Now, despite possessing the memories of the original Vision, he must determine whether those memories are enough to make him the same person.
That journey is expected to put identity, memory and purpose at the center of the story.
The series will also reunite Vision with Tommy, adding another emotional layer to his attempt to reconnect with the life he once had.
Ultron Returns to the MCU
Perhaps the biggest surprise surrounding VisionQuest is the return of Ultron.
James Spader will reprise the role of the artificial intelligence villain first introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron. His involvement could give the series an opportunity to revisit the MCU’s history with artificial intelligence while exploring how technology has evolved since Tony Stark’s era.
The story is also expected to feature other advanced technologies created by Stark, potentially expanding the connection between Vision’s origins and the wider technological legacy left behind in the MCU.
When Does VisionQuest Premiere on Disney+?
VisionQuest premieres on Disney+ on October 14.
The series will consist of eight episodes, with new instalments arriving weekly through December. Its release schedule places the finale close to the arrival of Avengers: Doctor Doom, giving Marvel another major Disney+ storyline leading into the next big MCU event.
With Paul Bettany returning, Ultron back in the story and White Vision finally getting the chance to explore his unresolved identity, VisionQuest could close several storylines that have remained open since WandaVision.
