What to Know Before He Visits

Dads Weekend is back Nov. 6-8, 2026, and if you’ve been putting off cleaning your apartment, this is your deadline.

Ohio University runs four Family Weekends a year: Family Weekend in September, Dads in November, Sibs in February, Moms in April, and Dads Weekend has always had a reputation as the low-key one.

It’s less about the spectacle of Homecoming or the chaos of Halloween, and more about walking around campus with your dad, eating something that isn’t dining hall food, and letting him see (or pretend to fully understand) what your life in Athens actually looks like now.

What’s On the Calendar So Far

OHIO Live has two shows locked in: magician Daniel Martin on Friday, Nov. 6, and comedian Ryan Hamilton on Saturday, Nov. 7, both at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, 8–10 PM.

If last year’s Dads Weekend (which brought country singer Ashley McBryde and comedian Zoltan Kaszas to the same stage) is any indication, this is genuinely a solid, dad-friendly night out, not a “sit through your kid’s music taste” situation.

Beyond OHIO Live, expect the rest of the lineup to fill in closer to the date: sporting events, campus tours, maybe a tailgate depending on the football schedule. Check OHIO’s full events calendar as November gets closer, since a lot gets added in the final few weeks.

The Actual Vibe of Dads Weekend

Ask around, and you’ll hear the same thing: Dads Weekend isn’t the wildest weekend on the OU calendar, and that’s kind of the point. One OU parent recalled visiting during his daughter’s senior year, using the weekend as one last chance to walk the campus before graduation. That’s the emotional core of it. It’s less “show dad a good time” and more “let dad see the life you’ve built here.”

If You’re Hosting Him at Your Off-Campus Place, Here’s What Actually Matters

  • Parking, before anything else. If your rental doesn’t come with a dedicated spot, figure out logistics in advance; don’t make him circle Congress or Mill Street for twenty minutes while you’re already running late to dinner.  This matters especially if you live in one of the Ohio University Court Street apartments, where street parking during a big weekend gets tight fast.
  • Actual space to sit down. A dorm room fits two people if one of you is on the floor. An off-campus apartment or house means your dad can sit on an actual couch, maybe you cook him something instead of doing the cafeteria walkthrough, and the visit feels less like a supervised tour and more like an actual hangout.
  • Distance from campus and Court Street matters more this weekend than usual. If your place is walkable to both the auditorium and uptown, your dad’s not driving anywhere all weekend, which, if you’ve ever tried to explain Athens parking to an out-of-towner, is a genuine gift.
  • Give him the “before and after” tour. Dads especially love comparing where you live now to freshman-year dorm stories. If your rental has a yard, a porch, or just more square footage than a shared double, that contrast lands every time.

The Bigger Picture

Dads Weekend tends to be the visit where things feel the most “grown up”: less chaperoned campus tour, more him seeing you actually living your life. If you’re already in an off-campus rental, this weekend is honestly one of the better arguments for having made that move: you get to host, not just show him where you sleep.
