Airport hotels have, historically, been the beige cardigan of the travel wardrobe – functional, uninspiring, and generally boasting all the personality of a stale bread roll. That is, until Moxy, Marriott’s rebellious offspring, swaggered onto the Sydney Airport scene, cocktail in hand and mischief in its grin, to flip the script on transit hotel purgatory.
Bold and a bit badass
From the outside, Moxy Sydney Airport is already extra in the best way possible. A massive blue and white pattern wrap by artist Elliott Routledge covers the façade in joyful chaos, like a TikTok filter exploded across a warehouse wall. Step inside, and it’s even more clear that this place has tossed the rulebook (and probably set it on fire).
Check-in? That happens at the bar. Yes, the actual bar, bathed in neon and stocked with a cocktail list that would make a CBD watering hole proud. And yes, every guest is offered a complimentary cocktail on arrival (mocktails for the mini travellers), which, after the soul-sucking slog of airport security or the existential dread of an impending red-eye, feels less like a welcome gesture and more like a public service.
Style meets stopover
It’s important to note that this isn’t one of those poky airport lobbies where lonely suits stare into an overpriced scotch while CNN murmurs apocalyptic news in the background. This lobby is the polar opposite – a genuinely ambient social hub, cavernous and industrial-chic, with exposed concrete, steel beams, and neon pink signage in a space that somehow feels like the secret love child of a Brooklyn loft and an inner-west warehouse party.
This is a lobby that’s meant to be used. During our visit, it’s buzzing with groups of young people kicking off their holiday on an Instagram-worthy high and families sprawled out on funky, low-slung couches. Kids giggle over giant Jenga and Connect 4 and challenge their adults to Skee-Ball (while said parents are a little reflex-challenged from the happy hour rosé they just knocked back).
And yes, while Moxy Sydney Airport is unapologetically playful, it still absolutely caters to business travellers, though, in true Moxy style, it ditches the stiff boardroom vibes in favour of something way cooler (and far more Insta-worthy).
A ping-pong table-slash-conference desk lives in a cool backroom dubbed The Record Room, which is a particular hit with my teen and her bestie, who ping and pong happily to a too-cool soundtrack of retro vinyl.
And there are plenty of stylish, communal spaces and comfy lounge areas throughout the lobby with built-in power outlets and free high-speed Wi-Fi that actually works.
Rooms with a runway (or city) view
Airport hotel rooms typically fall into one of two categories. The depressingly utilitarian box or overpriced luxury that feels faintly pointless when your alarm is set for 4:00am. The Moxy splits the difference with what I can only describe as practical hedonism.
The rooms aren’t sprawling, but they’re clever. City or runway facing (with triple glazed windows that blocks any noise), every element serves a purpose, from the under-bed safe and storage nook for luggage to the wall-mounted foldable desk and chair that pop out when needed.
There’s no wardrobe, because no one’s here for a week of lounging in robes, but the peg wall handles the essentials. A Chromecast-enabled TV means you can continue bingeing your latest streaming obsession. And the bedside table features a retro-style dial phone that, if you press the right button, will literally tell you a bedtime story. It’s charming. It’s weird. It’s peak Moxy.
The bathrooms are well-designed, and the refresh station is a thoughtful touch, featuring a sink, kettle, loose-leaf teas, hairdryer, and – bless them – a clothes steamer. Because even if you’re flying economy, your clothes don’t have to look like they did. There’s also a carafe to fill with fresh filtered water from the stations located on every level, because the Moxy isn’t just smart and sassy, it’s sustainable.
Moxy Sydney Airport is fab for families
Travelling with kids? Moxy has actually considered them! Queen Loft Sleepers are great for couples with one child, with a queen bed and a loft bed sitting horizontally above it. But tonight, we’re amping it up to a whole other level. I’m in a Moxy Queen Sleeper with a bed with an absurdly comfortable mattress, squishy pillows, and sheets I could happily get lost in.
And it’s all mine, because the kids are in a paired Quad Bunk Sleeper, with four proper bunks, each with individual USB ports so everyone can charge their devices without going to war. The two rooms are shut off as one via an outer door, accessible only by us, so we all have our privacy and space while still being in a secure family bubble. Genius!
The little things at Moxy Sydney Airport
Up on Level Four, you’ll find a surprisingly well-equipped gym complete with a bright pink boxing bag and hopscotch painted on the floor. (It’s a no-go zone for kids under 16, but it’s still a fun touch.)
Next door is The Stash, a cleverly designed self-service space that does triple duty as a laundry (a lifesaver if you’re in transit), supply room, and hydration station. Need an extra towel, to top up your tea stash, or to grab more loo roll? It’s all there, ready for the taking. If you need a washer and dryer or are hankering for a traditional iron and ironing board, you’ll find them here too.
There’s also an ice machine with buckets at the ready for your in-room G&Ts. And presiding over it all is a large, hunky photo on the wall that deserves a second glance while your socks spin in the dryer.
Feast between flights
We head down for dinner at Moxy Kitchen, and a menu that wouldn’t be out of place in a Surry Hills wine bar – think crispy salt and pepper squid, veggie burgers, poke bowls, and even steaks. We start with truffle-infused fries, smothered in Parmesan flakes and served with a side of roasted garlic aioli. My daughter claims them with the kind of ferocity of someone defending a birthright. Next up are fried chicken wings, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, with pickled radish and a spicy chilli glaze that hits all the right notes. The girls also tackle a chorizo and tomato cream gnocchi, topped with fresh rocket. And for dessert, cheesecake proves the perfect sweet note.
While there’s no room service, there’s a Grab & Go area with 24/7 access to snacks and beverages (including wine), because cravings don’t care about time zones. The teenagers make a beeline for it at midnight, hunting down cup noodles and ice cream like they’ve been charged with a mission from the snack gods. Honestly, what teen needs room service when they’ve got a room full of possibilities and zero judgement?
In the morning the Moxy Bar transforms into a buffet that is a sunrise love letter to carbs and caffeine. Hot options include scrambled eggs, sausage, beans, and crispy hash browns. Cold options? Yoghurt, fruit salad, cereal, bread, and pastries galore accompanied by an assortment of condiments, including a Nutella dispenser of legendary proportions. Complimentary plunger coffee comes courtesy of local roaster Double Roasters, or you can hit up Little Baxter Café for barista-made magic and pastries (at a small extra cost).
Stay one night, park for five nights free
Yes, you read that right! Hands-down one of the best family travel hacks in the city, the Moxy Sydney Airport’s ultimate mic-drop is its “Stay One Night, Park for Five Nights Free” deal. If you need to park longer, daily rates start at $15. So you can simply roll in, dump the car in a secure lot watched round-the-clock, and in the morning ride off into the airport sunset via complimentary shuttle (Moxy is the only Sydney airport hotel offering the service for free) to both terminals and Mascot Train Station – saving you not just time, but the soul-sapping gouge of airport train fares. The service is smart, generous, and frankly revolutionary in a city where you practically need to auction off a kidney for a street park.
The Verdict
While most airport hotels operate on the principle that their role is simply to exist as a convenient pit stop to recover from the peculiar trauma of modern air travel, the clever and cool Moxy Sydney Airport breaks the mould, offering an experience you’d actually choose for a holiday.
While it doesn’t pretend to be a luxury hotel, it provides a jolt of genuine hospitality in the mechanical process of modern travel, delivered with enough comfort, swagger, and soul to make you momentarily forget you’re sleeping in the shadow of a runway. And in a world of overpromising and underdelivering, that might just be the most luxurious thing of all.
