“Great people with a great attitude will always get noticed.”
One of my favorite opportunities each year is speaking with young people who are just beginning their careers. Recently, I had the chance to meet with participants in the Disney College Program at Flamingo Crossings, and I left just as encouraged as I hope they did.
Their questions weren’t surprising. They wanted to know how to stand out in interviews, whether they should hold out for the perfect job, and what employers are really looking for. Underneath every question was the same concern: Am I making the right decision?
I remember that feeling. When we’re starting out, it’s easy to believe our first job will define the rest of our career. In reality, it’s just the beginning. That’s why I encourage young professionals not to become overly focused on landing the perfect position. Instead, focus on joining a great organization where you can learn, grow, and work alongside people with high standards.
Experience has a way of opening doors that education alone cannot. That’s one of the reasons I believe so strongly in programs like the Disney College Program. Participants don’t just learn operational skills. They experience what excellence looks like. They learn how to work with people from different cultures, solve real problems, serve guests with professionalism, and build relationships that often last a lifetime.
Those experiences continue paying dividends long after the program ends. I also reminded the students that uncertainty is normal. Every generation wonders whether they’ll find the right opportunity or choose the right path. The people who succeed aren’t the ones who have everything figured out. They’re the ones willing to keep learning, accept new experiences, and trust that each opportunity is preparing them for the next.
Your first job won’t determine your future. Your attitude, your willingness to learn, and your commitment to excellence will. Those qualities will continue creating opportunities long after your job title changes.
