Revenue from .CA domains helps fund Net Good by CIRA, which supports projects, communities and policies working to build a better internet across Canada.
More than $1 million is invested annually in projects that strengthen Canada’s internet. Since 2014, CIRA has invested $15.45 million in 260 projects across the country.
What is Net Good by CIRA?
Net Good is based on a simple idea: the internet should be a positive force that everyone in Canada can benefit from.
CIRA puts that idea into action through three main areas: infrastructure, online safety and policy engagement. It also provides grants to community-led organizations working to make Canada’s internet more accessible, resilient, trusted and secure.
Improving internet access
Reliable internet affects how people learn, work, access services and stay connected. However, rural, remote and northern communities still face significant connectivity barriers.
CIRA supports community-led research and infrastructure projects designed to improve internet access and performance. It also offers the CIRA Internet Performance Test, which helps Canadians measure the speed and quality of their connection.
In Nunavut, a CIRA-funded project helped Nunavut Arctic College upgrade wireless infrastructure and connect five remote communities to low Earth orbit satellite technology. The project improved access in communities where reliable connectivity can be especially difficult to deliver.
Helping Canadians stay safe online
Net Good also funds educational programs, research, workshops and tools that help Canadians recognize and avoid online threats.
One grant-supported initiative delivered week-long digital literacy camps for Indigenous youth in rural and northern communities. Participants learned about privacy, artificial intelligence, deepfakes, cyber scams and other issues affecting their online lives. The program approached these topics through a rural, northern and Indigenous lens, making the lessons more relevant to the youth taking part.
CIRA also offers Canadian Shield, a free public DNS service for people in Canada that helps block known phishing and malware threats.
Bringing more voices into internet policy
The rules and policies shaping the internet affect everyone. CIRA supports research, events and public engagement that give more Canadians a voice in those decisions.
One example is Canada’s first Youth Internet Governance Forum. Funded through CIRA, the national event brought young people into conversations about internet policy and governance. It also helped participants build partnerships, explore career opportunities and remain involved in the field.
Projects like this help ensure that Canada’s digital future reflects a wider range of experiences and perspectives.
Net Good grants support non-profits, colleges, Indigenous organizations, researchers and other community groups that understand the needs of the people they serve.
The results look different across the country: improved connectivity in northern communities, online safety education for children and youth, cybersecurity training and research that brings overlooked perspectives into national conversations. Each project contributes to a safer, stronger and more inclusive Canadian internet.
