For this month’s department spotlight, we shine a light on Nicola Williams, Senior Litigation Executive in our Hull office. With over 20 years of experience in personal injury law, Nicola is known for her client-first approach and robust guidance and support throughout the claims process.
But who is Nicola Williams, and what drives her to do the work she does?
Here are a few of the questions we asked….
Life at Bridge McFarland LLP
1. What do you like most about working at Bridge McFarland LLP / working in the PI department?
I’ve worked in PI at Bridge McFarland for over 20 years now, and feeling like we are making a real difference to our clients’ lives is what I like the most. Being able to give them some comfort in knowing they are financially secure and can try to enjoy the life they deserve. Working for a team that works together and is willing to help each other out, no matter the situation.
2. What sets Bridge McFarland LLP apart from other law firms in handling personal injury cases?
I think the people who work for Bridge McFarland set us apart, as we work so well as a team, and that shows by the amount of previous client referrals we get. We will always go above and beyond for our clients, even if this comes at our own expense as a firm.
Career Journey & Motivation
3. Why did you decide to work in the legal profession?
It was something that had always interested me, and I wanted a career where I could learn while working on the job. I knew that law was vast and had many different aspects, so I was interested in figuring out what I felt would interest me the most.
4. Why did you specialise in Personal Injury?
I learned early on how interesting personal injury law could be and that it involved working closely with clients and building relationships and trust with clients so that we could ensure the best possible outcomes were achieved. I enjoy arguing out liability issues and proving our clients’ claims even when insurers would try to deny them.
5. What is the most rewarding part of your job as a personal injury lawyer?
The most rewarding part of my job is feeling as though we are making a difference and helping our clients try to get back to a place they once were before being involved in an accident. It is also rewarding to be able to help younger people who are starting out in their careers in law and being someone who is approachable and willing to help them as much as possible.
6. Can you share a memorable case you’ve worked on and its outcome?
I worked on a case that involved a child whose life was changed instantly, but rather than the injury defining him, he showed how life is what you make it, no matter the circumstance. We managed to successfully achieve compensation that would help him for the rest of his life and enable him to achieve the many goals he had set for himself.
Supporting Clients
7. What advice do you have for someone worried about making a claim?
To trust your lawyer who will help you every step of the way and guide you in terms of what to expect. Making a claim is your right to do if you have sustained injury through no fault of your own, and by bringing your claim, you could be making sure your accident doesn’t happen again to someone else.
8. What steps do you take to ensure your clients feel supported throughout their claim process?
I will check in with clients and make sure they are always updated and understand what happens next. I will always try to connect with my clients on a personal level as well as a professional level, so that they feel I am approachable and are able to ask whatever questions they may have.
9. What are some common misconceptions people have about making a personal injury claim?
Maybe that they will have to pay solicitor costs or that they may end up feeling as though they have done something wrong.
Community Involvement
10. How does your department contribute to the local community or support charitable causes?
We will support local events and sponsor as many sporting clubs as we can. Recently, we have supported the Flex Neuro Rehab Community Event and also sponsored Hull Zingari Cricket Club, who are doing amazing things in the community. We often will do events in the office, such as ‘Wear it Pink’ to raise money for breast cancer and also various other events throughout the year.
