In April of 2014, I had the opportunity to attend a memorable event that highlighted a major effort to support homeownership in Illinois. At the time, Governor Pat Quinn held a press conference at the James R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago to officially introduce the Welcome Home Illinois program—a state-backed initiative created to make buying a home more accessible and affordable for first-time buyers across Illinois.
As a Chicago real estate broker deeply invested in helping families achieve their homeownership goals, I was honored to be invited to the announcement. Even more meaningful, I was able to attend with clients of mine who were in the process of purchasing their first home. I still have three or four photos from that day, standing alongside Governor Quinn with my clients. The day represented not only a moment of statewide progress, but also a very personal milestone for the people I was helping become homeowners.
A Program Designed to Open Doors
The Welcome Home Illinois program was designed to reduce the financial barriers many buyers faced—particularly first-time homeowners who often struggled with saving enough for a down payment while balancing rent and other expenses. The program offered:
- $7,500 in down-payment assistance
- A 30-year fixed mortgage rate of just 3.75%
At the time, these terms were extremely attractive. Interest rates had fluctuated in the years following the recession, and many potential buyers felt uncertain about whether they could realistically make the jump from renting to owning. This program delivered both stability and relief—two things buyers desperately needed. It played an important role in helping thousands of Illinois residents become homeowners, including several of my own clients.
A Special Day at the Thompson Center
The press conference itself was held inside the Thompson Center—an iconic Chicago building known for its curved glass panels and open, multi-story atrium. The energy that day was upbeat and optimistic. State officials, housing advocates, and real estate professionals gathered to learn more about how the program would be rolled out and who it would benefit.
For my clients, being included in that moment made them feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger than a single home purchase. Buying a first home is emotional, exciting, and sometimes overwhelming. Standing there with them as Governor Quinn spoke about expanding opportunities for families across Illinois was a reminder of why I do this work.
As someone with over two decades of real estate experience, I’ve always believed that strong programs—paired with strong guidance—make all the difference. That day reaffirmed that belief.

Looking back, the Welcome Home Illinois initiative aligns perfectly with my mission as a Chicago Realtor. Whether programs come and go, what remains constant is the importance of educating buyers, offering trusted guidance, and helping people navigate the complexities of financing, inspections, negotiations, and closing.
During my 20+ years in real estate, I have continued to prioritize:

Being part of that 2014 announcement wasn’t just a photo opportunity—it was a moment that reinforced the impact real estate professionals can have when we work alongside our clients and our community.
Chicago Has Always Been About Opportunity
The story of my clients that day—like so many stories I’ve been part of—reflects the diversity and resilience that define our city. Chicago is full of people from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life who all share the same dream: having a place to call home.
Programs like Welcome Home Illinois helped make that dream a reality for many families. And while assistance programs may change from year to year, the goal remains the same: helping people put down roots, build equity, and shape their future.

That day in 2014 was about more than mortgage rates or down-payment grants. It was about opening doors. And that’s something I remain committed to doing every day.
