Billy Stuart’s Sink With Me EP is an anchor for the indie existentialists who crave the evocative visceralism of emo without the discordance. The Northern California singer-songwriter brought decades of experience in underground hardcore punk and doom metal into a devastatingly intimate solo debut.
Melodic maturity euphonically swells around the embittered proclamations within the opening single, Downtrend, which brings softly angular guitars into focus around his magnetically measured, haunted manifestations of introspection.
The Open Door continues in this heartbreakingly lush vein as the songwriter, who has perceptibly got no more teeth left to cut when it comes to creating devastatingly raw, heart-on-sleeve aural prose, lets more scars drift to the surface. Even the instrumental Reprieve has a way of making your tear ducts feel as though they’re reaching melting point with its quasi-neoclassical framing.
In Swan Dive and the concluding title single, Stuart proves his art is more profound than the majority of modern poetry. His way of visualising emotions that have rarely been pulled to the surface in this form deserves the attention of anyone searching for soul-affirming songwriting.
Recorded in Sacramento with producer Michael Cox, whose tragic passing followed their final completed session, the EP carries an especially poignant significance.
Sink With Me is now available on major streaming platforms, including Spotify.
