Why is China so frustrating? This is great question that I asked myself in different ways in the 90’s when I first arrived.
My personality is ESTJ for those of you who know MBTI or the best explanations found at www.keirsey.com.
My ESTJ shows that I am naturally traditional and judgmental. So, in my early years in China, I would ride my bicycle in town and talk to myself saying, “They are not wrong; they are just different.”
China has 5000 years of history separate from the West. We should not be surprised that they do almost everything different than we do. They, at best, even think quite differently. Yet to me it always felt wrong–for years. I did overcome and sink into this culture though it took me quite while. It gave me a lot of thought on what are Chinese people like.
I am not trying to say that everything that is different is OK. The ways they try to steal or deceive have a Chinese flavor, but in every country these things are not right. Some hires will not tell you the right things about what China is. They are deceiving you.
Many things here are opaque, and I like things on the table. I married an extremely open and transparent Chinese woman for a reason. Also, she also touched my heart like no one else could or would. Our 25th anniversary is end of this year.
