How to Style a Bed Like a Pro

If you’ve ever made your bed and felt like it still looks a little… underwhelming, you’re not alone. Getting that full, layered, effortlessly polished look you see in magazines usually comes down to a few key pieces, and knowing exactly how to put them together.

I realized this myself while refreshing our own bedding and noticed just how much the right layers (and quality basics) can transform the entire look and feel of a room.

In this post, I’m breaking down exactly how to style your bed like an interior designer, with a simple, step-by-step layering formula and my go-to recommendations for pieces that are both beautiful and practical.

The secret to a bed that looks effortlessly magazine-worthy? It’s all in the layers. From your foundational sheets to the finishing touch of a perfectly draped throw, each piece plays a role in creating that full, styled, designer look.

In this guide, I’m breaking down the 8 essential layers: sheets, quilt, duvet, sleep pillows, euro shams, a lumbar pillow, throw pillows, and a bed blanket. So you know exactly how to build your bed step by step (and which pieces are actually worth investing in).

1. Sheets

Sheets are so important, and they don’t have to be expensive. I usually stick to crisp white for that classic, layered look, but a subtle stripe or small pattern can be just as beautiful. The key is choosing sheets that feel soft, smooth, and breathable. Cotton or linen is always my go-to for a comfortable night’s sleep. I also recommend having two sets on hand so you can easily swap them out on laundry day and still keep your bed looking pulled together. Below are some of my favorite sheets:

Casaluna 100% Washed Linen Sheets If you have a little more to spend, these linen sheets are a great option. A linen blend is also a great alternative to 100% cotton

Quince European Linen Sheet Set – My new favorite brand, 50% off the price of traditional retailers for designer-quality items. These sheets come in so many solid and pattern styles.

Quince Classic Organic Percale Sheet Set – A budget-friendly option that is just as amazing as the European Linen.

Tuft & Needle Linen Sheets– These are the sheets I have and love.

2. Quilt

A quilt is one of the most versatile layers you can add to your bed. I like to use it as the base layer over my sheets, which lets you fold the duvet back at the end for that extra cozy, designer look. It also helps create that full, finished appearance without any sheets peeking through, one of the simple tricks professionals use to make a bed feel thicker and more polished.

It’s practical, too. On warmer nights, a quilt works perfectly as a lightweight layer when a duvet feels like too much. I typically stick with white for a clean, timeless look, but choosing one with subtle texture is a great way to add visual interest. Below are some of my favorite quilts:

3. Duvet Cover & Inserts

I’m a big fan of duvets over traditional comforters. One of the best things about them is the flexibility; you can invest in a high-quality insert and simply swap out the cover whenever you’re ready for a refresh, which makes updating your space so much easier (and more affordable over time).

I also love that you can choose the weight of your duvet insert, so it actually works for your sleep preferences and the season, something you don’t always get with a standard comforter. Plus, there’s just something about a well-made duvet that instantly makes a bed feel more elevated and pulled together.

Duvet Insert

Tuft & Needle Duvet Insert– Hands down the best duvet insert I have ever owned. It does run large, so be sure to check measurements when ordering a cover.

West Elm HydroCool Alternative Duvet Insert– We also have this insert, and if you run warm at night, I highly recommend.

Quince Premium Down Alternative Comforter

Cool Touch Down Alternative Duvet Insert– This is under $100 for a King. Highly rated and budget-friendly.

Premium Organic Cotton, Down Comforter – If you are looking for a true down insert and looking to invest in your bedding long term, I would recommend this one.

Duvet Cover

The duvet cover is where you can really have fun and bring your personal style into the bedroom. It’s the most expressive layer and a great way to switch things up without replacing everything. When choosing one, I always look for practical details like corner ties to keep the insert in place and a zipper closure for a clean, secure finish.

Here are a few of my favorites, but the options are truly endless.

European Linen Duvet Cover Set– This is the most similar to my current duvet cover. It comes in so many solid colors and patterns, and you can never go wrong with linen.

Guide to Bed Pillows

Pillows are the secret to making your bed look cozy, full, and professionally styled. The key is layering the right sizes in the right order.

Sleep Pillows– Start with your sleeping pillows. Two with pillow cases from your sheet set. Place these on the bottom. Two with shams from your duvet set. Place these on top.

Euro Shams– Next, add your euro shams. Use three for a king bed or two for a queen, to create that tall, structured backdrop (I love these in white for a clean, classic look).

At this point, you can select from two options

Lumbar– In front of those, place two small lumbar pillows, which can be decorative or neutral depending on your style.

Throw Pillow– Finish it off with one larger throw pillow (around 20×20) right in the center for that final, polished touch.

Or an alternate option would be,

Throw Pillow– In front of those, place two throw pillows, which can be decorative or neutral depending on your style.

Lumbar– Finish it off with one oversized lumbar pillow

Altogether, you’re looking at about 10 pillows total—aka the easiest way to achieve that full, layered, “pure cozy bliss” look.

4. Sleep Pillows

Sleep pillows are one of the most important layers on your bed, not just for how they look, but for how well you actually rest. The right pillows should properly support your head and neck based on your sleep position, helping you wake up without aches and feel truly refreshed. While they’re often hidden behind decorative layers during the day, investing in quality, comfortable sleep pillows makes a big difference in both the function and overall fullness of your bed.

5. Euro Shams

Euro shams are the key to giving your bed that full, elevated, designer look. These large square pillows create height and structure at the back of your arrangement, instantly making everything feel more substantial and styled. They act as the backdrop for your other pillows, helping each layer stand out while adding softness and dimension to the overall look.

6. Lumbar Pillows

Lumbar pillows are the layer that adds depth and a more curated, designer feel to your bed. You can keep it classic with two smaller lumbar or standard-size pillows for a balanced, symmetrical look, or opt for one oversized lumbar for a more modern, simplified style. Both options work beautifully; it just depends on whether you prefer a fuller, layered look or something a bit more minimal and relaxed.

7. Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are the finishing touch that pulls your whole bed together. This is where you can add a little personality, color, or texture to complete the look. You can keep it classic with two throw pillows (20×20 or 22×22) layered in front of your euros, or simplify things with one statement pillow centered on the bed. Either option adds that final polished layer that makes your bed feel thoughtfully styled and complete.

The options for throw pillows are truly endless and can be the final touch to add a little personality. This is my absolute favorite shop for throw pillows. They offer a variety of options, great quality, and affordable prices.

8. Bed Throw Blanket

The final touch is a bed blanket draped at the end of the bed, bringing everything together with an extra layer of warmth and texture. This piece is both functional and decorative, adding that relaxed, lived-in feel that makes a bed look effortlessly styled. You can choose any style you love, but I typically reach for a larger blanket for a more substantial, high-end look. Below are some of my favorites:

Creating a beautifully styled bed doesn’t have to be complicated; it just comes down to layering the right pieces in the right way. When you combine quality basics with a thoughtful mix of textures and proportions, you can achieve that full, cozy, magazine-worthy look in your own home. The best part is you can customize each layer to fit your style and needs, making your bed not only beautiful, but a place you truly love to unwind at the end of the day.
