When Heaven Feels Quiet: Learning to Trust God in Silent Seasons

Most of us have experienced silent seasons. Sometimes God feels quiet. Alexia Jones shares more in this post for the woman wondering if God hears her anymore.

I used to think that silence meant something was wrong.

That if I wasn’t hearing from God, it must be because I’d drifted too far, prayed too little, sinned too much, or somehow missed His will. I filled the quiet with questions. I wrestled. I overanalyzed. And to be honest—I sometimes got angry.

Why does it feel like I’m doing everything “right”… but hearing nothing at all?

Have you ever been there?

When God Doesn’t Answer Right Away

There’s a strange kind of loneliness in waiting on God. Not the kind that comes from being physically alone—but the ache that builds when your prayers feel like they’re echoing into a void. You show up in the Word. You pray. You wait. And still—nothing changes.

I’ve learned that this is actually a very human experience.

Even in Scripture, some of the most faithful people sat in seasons where God seemed silent.

  • David cried out in Psalm 13:1, “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?”
  • Hannah wept at the temple year after year, her womb still empty.
  • Job, stripped of everything, said, “I cry to You for help and You do not answer me” (Job 30:20).

And even Jesus, in His greatest hour of suffering, cried, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).

If Jesus experienced that feeling, I think it’s safe to say it’s not a sign of failure.

The Silence Doesn’t Mean He’s Gone

What I’m slowly learning is this: God’s silence doesn’t mean His absence.

Sometimes, silence is how He slows us down. How He creates space for trust. How He invites us into something deeper than instant answers.

It’s where faith moves from theory to reality—not because everything makes sense, but because we’re learning to trust Him anyway.

The truth? God may be quieter in some seasons, but He is never distant.

Maybe It’s Not Silence… Maybe It’s Stillness

I read once that God doesn’t always speak the loudest. Sometimes, He whispers.

In 1 Kings 19, Elijah expected God in the wind, the fire, and the earthquake. But the Lord came in a gentle whisper.

Whispers are intimate. You have to lean in to hear them.

And maybe that’s what silent seasons are about—not about God speaking less, but about Him drawing us closer.

What I’ve Found in the Quiet

If I’m being honest, I haven’t always handled silence well. I’ve filled it with distraction, doubt, or trying to “fix” my situation. But the most healing moments came when I finally stopped fighting the quiet—and started listening in it.

Here’s what I’ve found:

  • God speaks most clearly through His Word. Even when I don’t feel anything, I’ve learned to keep opening my Bible. It’s not about goosebumps. It’s about truth.
  • Worship helps me breathe again. Sometimes I don’t have words to pray, but worship realigns my heart with God’s character—whether I feel Him or not.
  • Journaling has become my lifeline. Writing out raw prayers helps me be honest with God. And I think He honors that honesty.

You’re Not Forgotten

If you’re in a silent season right now—please hear me:

You are not being punished.
You are not a bad Christian.
You are not forgotten.

God hasn’t gone quiet because He’s lost interest in you. In fact, He may be closer than you realize—working in the background, preparing things you can’t yet see, or strengthening something in you that couldn’t be formed any other way.

There Will Be a “Later”

I don’t know how long your quiet season will last. I don’t know when the answer will come. But I do know this:

God always finishes what He starts.

Sometimes, silence comes before resurrection.
Sometimes, hiddenness comes before calling.
Sometimes, waiting comes before the answer—but never without purpose.

Let your heart rest in this: God sees you. He hears you. And He hasn’t stopped loving you. Not for one second.

Can We Sit in This Together?

If this resonates with you—if you’re in a season of waiting, wrestling, or just wondering if God still hears you—I’d love to know.

What has your silent season looked like? What has helped you hold on?

Let’s remind each other: Even when heaven seems quiet… God is not gone.

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” — Psalm 37:7

Let’s talk: Have you walked through a season where God felt silent? What helped you trust Him again?
