A tiny 13th Century church in a small village in Kent is an unexpected place to find some internationally famous art. But All Saint’s Church in Tudeley in Kent is the only church in the world to have all of its twelve windows decorated by the Belarusian artist Marc Chagall. Chagall, who is known for his paintings, was also a master at stained glass, print making, book illustration, set design and tapestry work.
Walking into the church you are met with cobalt blue and lemon yellow colours streaming through the windows and the typical Chagall style dream-like images all around you.
Chagall was commissioned by Sir Henry and Lady d’Avigdor-Goldsmid to design the East stained glass window in the church in memory of their daughter Sarah who had died in a sailing accident at the age of 21. He had been commissioned to design just one window, but on visiting the church, he said he would design all twelve windows.
The twelve windows, designed between 1967 and 1982, The chancel windows being finally installed in 1985, the year of Chagall’s death at the age of 98.
