Port Aransas is a stopping-off point for the great North-South bird migration, so “Birders” come here with their binoculars and long-lensed cameras year-round. Located in the central flyway, Mustang Island hosts hundreds of native and migrating species. With its wetlands and dunes, this Island boasts six sites with boardwalks and observation towers, making it the perfect location to observe hundreds of species in their natural habitat. Whooping Cranes nest here in the winter months, but by the end of April, the White Pelican, Roseate Spoonbills, Royal Terns, and Black Skimmers are just a few of the species you will see. We went to the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center to paint the wetlands. We also observed excited whispering “Birders” following a tiny red-throated “something-or-other” and a Yellow-tipped “whatever” with great enthusiasm! However, I am embarrassed to say none of us attempted to paint a single bird. Perhaps I need to put a flying pelican in the painting above. What do you think?
