A Sad Loss For Thriller Lovers – The Dorset Book Detective

Prolific crime fiction and thriller author Mandasue Heller died on September 30th 2026, following a brief illness, according to her publisher Orion Publishing.

She was 66 years old, which is far too young. Having started out with an impressively diverse career, which included being a barmaid, singer and phone tarot card reader, of all things, Heller started writing books several decades ago, and had built up an impressive back catalogue of thrillers spanning more than 25 books.

While she had a brief stint as a scriptwriter for the TV police procedural The Bill, Heller will be most remembered for her thrillers, which included Affraid, The Family and Forget Me Not.

Her most recent novel, The Child, was only published earlier this year. Heller was still writing regularly and had been expected by fans to release more novels.

In an interview, Heller once said that she tried her hand and romance but got sick of her characters very quickly. Despite this, it was her characterisation in her thrillers that drew readers in. Her dialogue was impeccable and she had the rare skill of being able to share information about her characters naturally through their actions and without info-dumping.

As an experienced thriller writer, Heller was a master of suspense and was highly skilled at creating characters that were both interesting but also fully believable. Her books were standalone novels, and while they were slightly forumalic, they were still gripping thrillers that were great for when you needed an easy but still engaging read.

As much as Heller never liked writing romance, her books often centered around relationships, especially young women looking for a purpose and someone to care for them who are often drawn to men who turn out to be more than they appear. Whether they’re gang members, criminals or just sinister, Heller had a way of keeping her character’s secrets for them so the reader was left guessing until the very last page.

It was this creative approach to characterisation and eye for a twist that made Mandasue Heller so popular and kept her books on the bestseller lists.

While she was a prolific writer with a large back catalogue of hugely popular books, Heller was also kept her private life to herself. However, she did have a family and adult children, and our thoughts are with them.

At the end of the day, the loss of Mandasue Heller is a bitter blow to readers who enjoyed her books and were looking forward to future installments. However, Heller left behind a legacy of incredible work that will live on.
