Book Review: The Truth Chamber by Duncan Ritchie

Releasing soon, The Truth Chamber bears eerie parallels to current events. ~540 pages speaks loudly in this book, but aside from subject matter, the writing itself is not one a take lightly either. Sharp and crisp prose awaits you on September 1st and for today’s post, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on this book!

It is a sobering reflection on power and the increasingly distorted concept of truth.

What an explosive read! The story begins with the moments right after an explosion rocks a ballroom on the fourth floor of the Four Seasons where Anna Hoffman supporters gathered. The presidential candidate is last seen rushed off to the hospital and that’s how the book starts, a foreshadowing of how much violence was to come.

However, perhaps it’s better to say it is the first presentation of the violence we as the readers get to see, because that prologue is actually glimpse into the future and the actual book begins months back with Admiral Liam Driscall, struggling with the loss of his wife after already having lost his son. He joins Anna’s campaign and the story kicks off into 500 pages of disinformation, violence, and the rise of authoritarianism. Anna and her team desperately try to win this campaign. If the Mack Leach, known as the Red Caesar, succeeds in becoming president, the damage would be catastrophic. Her team enlists the help of a few Stanford students, developing a “Truth Chamber” and together, they try to get to the bottom of a series of high casualty violence rocking America. The sudden spike is no coincidence and if they want a sliver of a chance to stop the Red Caesar, this AI lie detector may be their only shot at saving the country and Democracy.

The plot was explosive to say the least. I rarely read political thrillers, but this one caught my eye at how similar it was to current politics. Some moments almost mirror in certain aspects; eerily resemblant to real life current events. Some moments have my stomach in knots, the abomination and cruelty, the hatred in the Red Caesar’s (or his supporters’) words, malice entirely venomous and evil. The violence was terrifying and all too familiar. What started as a single shocking moment quickly grows into two, three incidents and then suddenly the country is looking at a sharp uptick in mass casualty crimes. By the time the team realizes these events appear to be linked and coordinated, there’s little time left and looking for evidence is their top priority, even if they have to walk and maybe cross an ethical (and legal) boundary.

Despite being a large book, the pacing of this was pretty decent. Not as fast as some thrillers, but certainly not slow. Every few chapters, someone new is introduced (there are quite a lot of characters), some new massive news-breaking event happens, or dangers are encountered; no rest to be found for Liam nor the others on Anna’s team with some moments too close for comfort…or worse. The writing and dialogue are great, possibly my favorite aspect of the book. The writing itself was CRISP and the dialogue was just as sharp. The chapters are short, the prose is punchy, the plot and story intense and blistering, and there’s no shortage of suspense in the book. 

If you’re looking for a political thriller that mirrors real life current events and tones, with a bit of mystery and a drop of technology mixed in, The Truth Chamber may be right up your alley.
