Yours truly got invited to cover a milestone with my all-time favorite band. Eraserheads, one of the greatest Filipino rock groups of all time, got awarded the Gawad Oblation medal from the University of the Philippines. The event was a significant recognition of their contribution to the music industry and their alma mater.
The prestigious event took place at the executive house of UP Diliman in Quezon City, and it was an evening filled with nostalgia, celebration, and pride. The Heads’ family, friends, as well as the administration of the University of the Philippines, graced the occasion, adding to the sense of honor and reverence surrounding the award ceremony.
The Gawad Oblation Medal holds profound meaning, as it is bestowed upon individuals and organizations that have rendered extraordinary service with or in the name of UP. The Eraserheads—Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro—are esteemed alumni of UP, and their influential presence continues to resonate within the university and the wider community.
This momentous occasion not only celebrated the musical achievements of the Eraserheads but also highlighted the strong bond between the band and their alma mater. Their journey from UP students to iconic musicians has inspired countless individuals, and this recognition further solidifies their impact on the local and international music scene.

UP President Angelo Jimenez praised the band, stating, “The Eraserheads are a pivotal force in the history of Original Pilipino Music. They remain a cultural icon for the ages.”

Francis Lumen, president of AYC Productions, now WEU Events Management Inc., gave his testimonials about the Eraserheads. He is the promoter of the group’s reunion concert in 2008 at BGC Open Field, 2009 at Mall of Asia Concert Grounds, and in 2022 at SMDC Festival Grounds.

Robin Rivera, former humanities professor and producer of all Eraserheads albums (except for Ultraelectromagneticpop!). He produced the group’s first ever EP album, Pop U! at their faculty studio of U.P in March 26-27, 1991. Only 20 tapes were produced during that time.

Eraserheads delivering their speeches.
Mabuhay ang Noypi!”, Buddy said “I came to the university as a 16-year-old from Zamboanga. My world expanded. UP has given us many unforgettable experiences, academic and otherwise– countless of which made their way into our songs. Our experiences in the university inform our storytelling.” Raimund said “Dito nagsimula kahit na hindi nakapagtapos. Salamat sa karangalan, parang grumadweyt narin kami ngayon. Padayon.”. Ely reminisce his times during in UP including passing a Spanish class by sending a copy of “Pare Ko” to his professor which was inspired from his college bud. Buendia added: “The Eraserheads would not exist without UP,”.

Established in 2017, the Gawad Oblation Award recognizes significant contributions to UP’s prestige. Named after the UP Oblation statue by National Artist Guillermo Tolentino, it symbolizes the university’s commitment to service and excellence.
