Gaming with Children » Dot Clash (Mobile)

Remember the game of Dots that you used to play in school notebooks or activity pads?  Well here’s a modernized version of it with futuristic neon graphics, power-ups, and tough computer opponents.  Dot Clash is available on mobile devices, but reviewed on iPad here.

Dots is very simple, just take turns drawing a straight line on a grid of dots.  And if you complete a square with one of your straight lines, you get a point and get to go again.  And whoever has the most squares after all the lines have been drawn, wins.  Here you can play a campaign mode against the computer.  There are also daily puzzles, challenges, and a local two player mode.  To play, simply tap a line that you want to draw with your color.  Later on, you and the computer will be able to use power-ups, like being able to take two turns.  Although I have to say it wasn’t very clear on how to do that.  Plus the text was way too small and it gets very difficult quickly.  But then, I’ve never been a super big fan of the Dots game and was never very good at it.  But if you enjoyed it, the game is free so it won’t hurt to try.

Kid Factor:

Nothing violent or objectionable here.  Reading skill is helpful for the text and parental supervision is recommended for the in-game ads and purchases.  Honestly I’d just give kids pencils and paper to play this one.
