Gasping at the Depth of Gospel Generosity

Gospel generosity is not primarily about the size of the gift—it is about the depth of our ongoing grasp of what Christ has done for us. I learned this most powerfully through the lives of Bert and Mary Crosswhite.

The Hospice Revelation

I’ll never forget visiting Bert in hospice. He was in a wheelchair, weeping. I put my hand on his shoulder and asked what was wrong. He looked up, tears streaming, and said, “I still cannot believe that Christ died for my sins. I still can’t believe He did it for me.”

Here was a man in his mid-eighties, at the end of his earthly journey, still overwhelmed by the Gospel. That moment crystallized everything for me. The key to a generous life is a deep, ongoing apprehension of Christ’s sacrifice and open-handed love. When we truly grasp it, generosity becomes the natural outflow. It ignites our hands, our hearts, and our legacy,

A Transformation That Changed Everything

Bert came to Christ in his early seventies—a rare, late-in-life transformation that reoriented his entire perspective. The son of a Kansas sharecropper, he had built a remarkable business career through grit, opportunity, and hard work, prospering even through the Great Depression and later building a thriving gravel and industrial enterprise in Oregon. For most of his life, he believed he had done it all himself.

A Cancer Diagnosis

Then his son Bob’s cancer diagnosis brought him to the end of himself. He and his first wife, Virginia, gave their lives to the Lord. In that season, Bert discovered the gift of salvation—bought and paid for by God Himself—and began to see that every opportunity and blessing had come from God’s hand. After Virginia’s death, he married Mary, a lifelong believer who became his partner in faith and generosity.

Together they decided Bert would give away nearly everything by the time he went home to be with the Lord. They supported more than twenty ministries at a significant level, praying daily for wisdom on where and how to give. Their generosity was never a moment; it was a lifestyle rooted in gratitude for the Gospel.

A Seed That Multiplied

That lifestyle included an anonymous gift that launched our vocational ministry with DELTA Ministries. It was not just money. It was a seed. Over the next thirteen years, we watched God provide in breathtaking ways. We helped discover millions of dollars that funded tens of thousands of missionaries serving in more than one hundred countries.

The True Measure

Bert’s story reminds every steward leader that true success is not measured by what we accumulate, but by how fully we receive the Gospel and then release what God has entrusted to us. As Bert himself came to understand, God blesses us so that we might bless others through all He has so generously given.

When the wonder of the cross still brings tears in our final days, generosity will have marked our entire journey.
