A decade-old iPad
Many iPhone Duo fans are under the impression that Apple’s new foldable can double as an iPad mini. Sure, there’s certainly some overlap, but the 7.6-inch foldable phone is still powered by iOS—not iPadOS. So, while the iPad mini now supports true multi-tasking, the iPhone Duo is limited to the basic two-app Split View first introduced by iOS 9 for the iPad in 2015, a far cry from the iPad’s floating windows. Similarly, the iPad mini’s dock can accommodate around a dozen apps, while the iPhone Duo is limited to four. It’ll feel like a vintage, iPad in comparison.
Other iPadOS exclusives unavailable on the iPhone Duo include desktop-class apps, the menu bar, and Apple Pencil Pro support. While the foldable will be compatible with Apple Pencil (USB-C), the cheaper stylus misses out on several handy features available with the Pro model, including magnetic charging, Find My, barrel roll, squeeze and pressure sensitivity, haptic feedback, and more. The iPad mini supports either styluses, giving you the option to doodle on its larger 8.3-inch canvas using the cheaper or more advanced Apple Pencil.

The iPhone Duo’s moniker is pretty self-explanatory; it’s essentially two iPhones stitched together. Or is it? While the foldable does pack two batteries, it only offers a single battery life of 31 hours when playing video on the inner screen. By buying an iPhone 18 Pro and an iPad mini, you’re getting two independent battery lives, providing around 46 hours of video playback in total.
Likewise, buying the two iDevices separately delivers two flagship processors and more storage than the Duo. The base iPhone 18 Pro comes with 256GB and the cheapest iPad mini goes for 128GB; that’s a total of 384GB or 50 percent more local storage than the iPhone Duo’s entry-level capacity of 256GB. And by having two distinct SoCs, you could run more power-hungry tasks simultaneously and finish projects faster. You also get uninterrupted access to one of your devices when the other is charging, updating its OS, executing a demanding task, or being used by your kid.
You won’t be getting Apple’s best camera system with the Duo.

Shortsighted vision
While the Duo is Apple’s most expensive iPhone to date, it doesn’t really match flagship iPhones’ camera capabilities. The iPhone 18 Pro’s rear camera system includes a telephoto lens, unlocking 8x and 40x optical and digital zoom ranges—that’s completely missing on the Duo. Elsewhere, the iPhone 18 Pro exclusively has a variable aperture main camera, letting you physically control how much light reaches the sensor and adjust the depth of field accordingly.
It also supports powerful software controls, suchas white balance and shutter speed tweaks, along with Apple Log and other advanced video formats. As such, you can shoot professionally with your iPhone 18 Pro and instantly AirDrop or iCloud-sync the output to your iPad mini for more convenient editing. Try doing that with a Duo.
