I have been doing writer’s prompts and I got the idea to incorporate one into this post, it is about relating to the reader and Psalm 91. I don’t usually do them but I have been spending less time typing and more note taking. I’m rarely at a loss for words or deal with writer’s block, but I want to relay His love the best way I know how. I would suggest you read it and in several translations, you might be surprised at a new take on it.
Like God, I would invite you in. But you are moving in, living with Him, that is what to dwell means. To settle down, remain. I would welcome you and you would be safe but I can’t do what He can. He is the Most High, you are in His shadow, shade, no matter where you go that shadow is a penumbra, an umbrella from the storms. It is the same shadow that never turns as He give good gifts, James 4:17. It follows you covers you and protects you. My prayers can do that but I can’t be everywhere at once, He can. It is a shelter, a place of safety, so is my house but not like His.
The phrase ” shelter in place ” has been in the news. I suppose it is often related to wars, epidemics, or some disaster. God is our refuge, fortress. We are surely safe in His home, castle, dwelling or shadow. That is why we have to tell Him that we trust Him. He is protecting us from the snares of the fowler meaning that we are not going to trapped by enemy schemes or devices, He promises that we will be felled by disease and plagues, and though they come in a fallen world, He is there. We are spared from so much that we don’t realize. No matter what happens, He is there. Plans fail because He sent us a healer. Even if caught, He can deliver us, and or course forgive. He also teaches us to avoid evil.
He covers us with His feathers, the feathers of His angels and the love of a Heavenly Father. He also loves like a mother and I sent out Psalm 91 with a picture of a mother swan and her babies ( cygnets ) on her back and under her wing, safe and protected. Bird feathers have oil to protect them, just as the oil of the Spirit protects us. He is our refuge. Imagine being protected by golden and powerful wings.
You may recall the word buckler, but rampart is also use. It is a wall surrounding a fort/fortress, even a large mound to hide behind in battle. A rampart is a defensive structure with people assigned there day and night. Buckler is associated with a sword and is a small shield, though some were as as tall as the soldiers. God doesn’t want us to live in fear. He describes covering Israel, like chicks.
When we shelter in His place, the secret place of the Most High, we don’t have fear night terrors, nightmares, the terrible things that night has been used to hide in. It was mean for rest, ease and not terror or torment. And not of the arrows that fly by day, whether war or just verbal abuse, the fiery darts of the enemy or of a tongue. Not from the demonic that walks in either day or night, even at noon. You must understand that sacrifices were offered at noon. There were terrible noises made in many temples frightening the crowds, all a trick to control them and keep them afraid. Food that was offered would disappear, not doubt a trap door would allow someone to come and gather it. Many are killed but I like to think how many are spared and perhaps just because they prayed Psalm 91 or that someone did for them. And many who are wicked and bent on destruction perish.
Pestilence is plague, disease but also anything evil that can come our way. It has to do with judgement, but keep in mind that certain things God allows because He has He has a timetable, and He has given us free will. As long as people are not going to stop doing what it they do to keep trouble brewing, stirring trouble in secret, the world itself remains troubled but we are sheltered in the secret place of the Most High. We see lots of weather that comes in like that, fire and even floods.
He gives His angels commands to guard and direct us. We can walk through the world and the spiritual one, over all the devious, and demonic. We tread over things that most people are not privy to, unless operating in spiritual gifts and discernments. Angels from guardians to archangels are over where we live and where go, and some places the Spirit will not allow you to go.
Finally, the Lord is speaking, He knows when we love Him and are secreted in that shadow of protection. He hears us read the Psalm, pray it aloud, He hears it echo through the Spirit into the throne room, that we have access to because of Jesus. He may be telling you to rest, to heal, to shelter in place in war zone or battlefield or even just the one that goes on in the mind and heart, the Father knows when we love and are loved and wants to show us long life and His salvation, even eternal life in His Son.
He saves our soul once, but saves us continually from harm, danger, hurts, words that could destroy us, and even worse plots that we know but He is Lord and we can take comfort in His salvation, He longs to be our rest and refuge, our place of safety where we live, so take heed and heart, and shelter in place, the secret place of the Most High,
