When it comes to Peranakan food, Katong is usually the first place that comes
to mind. But here’s the thing, if you venture a little further east, there are
some underrated gems quietly holding their own.

We previously checked out
Nyonya Taste by Brew and Bar near Simpang Bedok, and this time, we headed to Bedok North to try
Marie’s Lapis Cafe.

A Hidden Gem in Bedok North

This was one of those surprised finds. A quick Google search for Peranakan
food in Bedok led us here, and honestly, it feels like a proper hidden gem.

Located in a quiet corner next to Bedok 538 Market and Food Centre, it is
definitely off the beaten track. There’s no MRT nearby, so unless you stay in
the area, you probably wouldn’t stumble upon it. That said, this is exactly
the kind of neighbourhood spot residents would want to keep to themselves.

The cafe itself is small, seating around 20 to 30 pax including outdoor seats.
The vibe is уют and nostalgic, with a homely retro charm that makes you feel
like you are dining in someone’s living room.

Fun fact: Marie’s Lapis Cafe clinched “Best Mee Siam in Town” at the Class
95FM Foodie Choice Awards May 2024. We did not try it this round as we were
craving other Peranakan staples, but that just gives us a reason to come back.

What We Tried

Ayam Pongteh

Tender chicken in a rich, savoury gravy with mild sweetness. Comforting and
full of flavour without being overpowering.

Chap Chye

A classic done right. Cabbage, mushrooms, black fungus, and knotted lily buds
braised in a savoury sauce. Nicely balanced with a hint of sweetness.

Blue Pea Rice with Omelette

Visually striking and fragrant. The rice had a light аромат, and
paired well with the fluffy omelette.

Ngoh Hiang

Crispy bite-sized rolls packed with chicken, prawn, and water chestnut. A
great starter to get the appetite going.

Kueh Salat

Chewy, fragrant, and not overly sweet. A satisfying end to the meal.

Is This the Cheapest Peranakan Food in Town?

Short answer: it might just be.

Portions were generous enough for two to share, and the prices were
surprisingly low. Compared to many Peranakan restaurants, you are easily
paying almost half here. On top of that, there is no GST and no service
charge, which makes the value even more compelling.

Verdict

Marie’s Lapis Cafe is the kind of place you don’t plan for, but end up wanting
to return to. It delivers authentic Peranakan flavours in a cosy, no-frills
setting, without the usual price tag. A shoutout to the owner who greeted us
at the door with a warm smile. You can feel the passion and warmth the moment
you step in.

We will definitely be back to try their award-winning Mee Siam and explore
more of the menu.

If you are looking for value-for-money Peranakan food with a homely vibe, this
little Bedok North spot is well worth the trip.
