See how I created a little Summer Sea Glass Tablescape to remind me of the beach all summer long.
As we welcome in the month of June, and the much anticipated “daze of summer”. I can’t help but dream of white sandy beaches, coastal breezes and the cerulean blue waters the sea. This summer I decided to added a little seaside beach vibe of my own, to my dining room and created my own beach side retreat with my Summer Sea Glass Tablescape.
For some reason this year, the color and tones of sea glass have been calling to me. Maybe it’s just a piece of my soul longing for the beach, but I have found true serenity when decorating with them. They create such a relaxed easy to live in feeling in my home.
My love for sea glass started about 10 years ago, when I discovered a super talented jewelry designer in the temporary section of America’s Mart. The artist used only sea glass as her medium, and the rest is history.
Now every time I go to the beach my eyes comb through the sand in hopes of finding the highly sough after sea glass treasure. Sometimes I am lucky and find a piece or two, but now with all the eco-green do gooder’s not as much washes up, which is probably a good thing, I guess.
What is Sea Glass?
A naturally produced sea glass (“genuine sea glass”) originates as pieces of glass from broken bottles, broken tableware, or even shipwrecks, which are rolled and tumbled in the ocean for years until all of their edges are rounded off, and the slickness of the glass has been worn to a frosted appearance. The most common colors are cobalt blue, lime green, emerald green, and aqua blue, as seen here in the glass buoy’s.
Set The Table
The most important thing to to keep in mind when creating a centerpiece for you dinning room, is that people will actually be sitting at your table. This means if you plan for them to talk during dinner, which most people do, the focal piece needs to be low enough your guests can see each other. I found this to be one of the most common problems in creating a beautiful yet functional tablescape.
Even in the wedding business I have brides wanting big table arrangements, that sadly end up being moved to the floor so your guests can chat. (Yes I have actually seen it happen) On that note I also feel like I should state, I really love the idea that a dining room table center piece does not always have to be flowers. Although I am a floral designer, and it is always where my mind goes to first, sometimes you just got to change it up. Do the unexpected, and surprise you guests.
These fun antique glass buoy’s that alone create an interesting conversation starter, but grouped together they also provide vivid pop of color and reflect light into the center of the table. Add in some monkey knots made of rope and sea shells to create visual texture to the table. This type of centerpiece will make your guest want to reach out and touch it, which is perfectly fine.
I layered in a casual burlap charger, which is offset by the formal gold rimmed bone china and gold flatware. I personally like the mix of gold with the sea tones, I think that they play well together. Now just add in your favorite seaside meal and your have an instant beach trip with our ever leaving your house. 
Designer Tip: A fun idea for a place card would be to add new fishing bobber’s adorned with your guests name. You could also pair a fish bowl cocktail to this theme easily.
