2025 General Homebrewer Survey Results

Authors: Marshall Schott & Andrew Bromley

Big thanks to the nearly 1500 people who took the time to complete our 2025 General Homebrew Survey! As pleased as we are with the total number of respondents, the reduction from previous years is likely a reflection of the current state of beer and brewing, which is ongoing issue. The fact we still have an outlet like homebrewing to keep us busy during these very odd times is wonderful, and our hope with this survey is to track the seemingly ever-evolving world of homebrewing.

It behooves us to acknowledge that despite our efforts to reach homebrewers far and wide for the purposes of generalizability, given the source of this survey, the data may be slightly skewed toward those who follow Brülosophy. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the data from this year’s survey paints pretty much the same general picture of the modern homebrewer as a middle-aged white dude who’s financially well-off, lives in an owned home, brews a batch or two per month, and prefers either IPA or pale lager.

One of the more interesting trends when comparing this year’s data to that of all past years is the gradual shift in respondents’ years of brewing experience – whereas in 2018, around 40% of respondents reported brewing for 3 years or less with just 16% saying they have 10 years or more experience, those numbers essentially flipped in 2025. What does this tell us? On one hand, it’s a pretty clear indicator that many of the people who were brewing back then have stuck with the hobby, which is rad, but it also indicates a paucity of new homebrewers. I’ve no intention of spending any more time than we already have going over what we think would attract more people to this badass hobby, if that’s what you’re after, there are umpteen podcast episodes where we’ve touched on it.

I truly cannot say enough how much we appreciate everybody who not only took the time to complete this survey, but who supports our efforts by reading our articles, listening to our podcasts, and watching our YouTube videos. This data, and Brülosophy as a whole, is here because of you, and we appreciate it!
