This fun roll and draw monster dice game is perfect for an easy Halloween activity, a rainy day, or as an early finisher activity in the classroom.

As an early childhood teacher I love how this one simple activity includes lots of learning opportunities. Kids are practicing counting and recognising numbers 1-6. They are working on fine motor skills as they roll the dice and draw each monster feature. Plus they are practicing spatial awareness as they draw different parts on the monster in correct relation to one another.

I’ve included the monster’s body as a starting point so that my preschoolers could have a go at this activity, but older kids will love it too!

With 1,296 possible combinations you could draw, no two monsters will turn out the same!

How to Play Roll and Draw a Monster

Supplies:

  • Roll and Draw a Monster printable (download below)
  • A dice or spinner
  • Pencils, markers, or crayons

TIP: Print a few spare copies. Kids often want to make more than one monster!

The furry monster body and feet are already drawn as a starting point.

To play simply roll the dice and add the part of the monster that is listed for that number to the body. Each roll of the dice corresponds to a different part of the monster

  1. On your first roll you add the monsters eyes – the number you roll on the dice will show you which pair of eyes to draw on the monster.
  2. Roll two you add a mouth
  3. Roll 3 you add horns
  4. Roll one last time to add arms (or tentacles!)

Now you have added all the parts to the monster you can colour it in and give it a name!

Tips and Extension Ideas

  • Play as a group. Take turns rolling the dice and adding to your monster, if you roll a number you have already drawn you skip your turn. See who finishes their monster first.
  • Talk about your monsters as you draw them – where do they live? what do they eat?
  • Use your monster as a writing prompt. Write a story about your monster!
  • Skip the dice. Younger kids might enjoy using this printable as a simple drawing prompt, they can add whatever features they like to the monster’s body.
