Villa Pestarini by Franco Albini

The second Alcova location I visited was Villa Pestarini, the villa opened its doors for the first time to the public, we booked a time slot in the afternoon after visiting ‘The Baggio Military Hospital’. I wrote a few articles about some of the presentations at Baggio Military Hospital, but soon after Milan I was busy with Antwerp Design Week and planning 3 Days of Design. Creating a solid list and schedule for Design Weeks is a pretty time consuming but also super useful task. There is always a lot to see and you always run out of time, so I like to head out a bit prepared.

You get the best impression of ‘The Baggio Military Hospital’ by browsing through my Alcova highlight on Instagram it really contains everything I thought was worth showing. I hadn’t gotten around to an article about the second location yet. It was great to get to see another example of Italian history through Alcova. Taking photos at the villa wasn’t always easy. Some of the rooms were small, and it was busy with visitors who all wanted to go in each room at the same time. Nevertheless, I took a few pictures that I am sharing with you here today.

Villa Pestarini

Villa Pestarini dates back to 1938/1939, when Franco Albini was 33 years old, and is considered one of the clearest examples of Italian rationalism. Its design is defined by precise geometry: a white rectangular volume, glass-block façades, and large windows overlooking the garden. Franco Albini (1905–1977) was an influential Italian architect and designer, and one of the key figures of Italian rationalism. Beautiful preserved over the decades by owners devoted to its legacy, the house remains an almost miraculous example to Albini’s unique balance of discipline and poetry, and one of the most authentic expressions of recurring themes in his work.
